One of my goals in 2016 is to use my online platforms to raise awareness for a worthy cause. On Sat., 10/15, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will host the Santa Monica Out of the Darkness Community Walk. My friend Alyssa and I have formed a team to participate and to raise awareness for mental health-related issues and funds for suicide prevention. There are two simple ways to help us out: join our team and/or donate (no amount is too big or too small)!
It is also important to spread the word that September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month which helps promote resources and awareness around the issues of suicide prevention, how you can help others and how to talk about suicide without increasing the risk of harm.
It’s important to remember that suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people and is often the result of mental health conditions.
Crisis and Information Resources – What can I do?
LOTS! In addition to supporting my October walk team, consider using your own online platforms and influence for good! Here is some reading material, information and graphics to help.
- Know the Warning Signs and Risk of Suicide
- Preventing Suicide as a Family Member or Caregiver
- Being Prepared for a Crisis
- National Suicide Hotline 1-800-273 TALK (8255) (or dial 911!)
- Get Involved
- Donate
Share the images and graphics below (click for full size) during the month of September to help promote awareness of suicide prevention resources and promote discussion of suicide prevention awareness. You can also use #suicideprevention or #IAmStigmaFree on social media.
