Friday Favorites: On the Surface of the Sun

October 25, 2019 By AJ Leave a Comment

Hello, internet, it is me, the unreliable blogger, back with another random batch of “Friday Favorites.” Who’s excited? If you’re not excited, go away. And for my fellow Angelenos, stay cool. It is hotter than all get-out and WHERE IS MY FALL AND WINTER? I can’t take this.

Friday Favorites

WHAT I READ

  • Every Fall I read this. And every year I laugh til it hurts reading it. Never fails. If you have never read “It’s Decorative Gourd Season….” from McSweeney’s, you should.
  • Mitt Romney has (had?) a secret Twitter account? Sure, sure, why not?
  • I don’t mean to get all political, but on Hunter Biden. Donald Trump Jr. actually said, “When you’re the father and your son’s entire career is dependent on that, they own you.” Like, without a glimmer of irony or hypocrisy. Because this is where we live now.

OTHER BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

  • This recipe for Banana Pudding Poke Cake.
  • Have you ever made Mac & Cheese in a sheet pan? I’m thinking this is the way to go.
  • Hollywood Picture News recapped all the trailers of the week to help the world make their movie-going decision this weekend.

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • I had to take a “sick day” this week. I put that in quotes because can a freelancer ever really take a sick day? But anyway, I binged some Netflix. I tackled documentary Tell Me Who I am, Docu-series “Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates” and Jenny Slate’s stand-up special. I highly recommend all three.
  • I stopped a woman in a public restroom because I liked her skirt. She had the perfect response: “Macy’s. Alfani. On sale.”
  • I got the new iPhone ProMax 11 and the camera is pretty amazing. I’m obsessed with these photos I took of my pup:

PR & SOCIAL MEDIA

  • This publicist got real candid about working at a film festival and I am all about her truth.
  • I was on a podcast! Thanks so much to the “Business and BS” team for having me. You can listen here. I’m very proud of it.
  • In addition, my client Micah Brown, who directed ESPN “30 for 30” documentary, “Chuck & Tito,” was on the Adam Carolla Podcast (with Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz). Listen to that here.
  • Another client of mine, Frank Lesser, was featured in INC. Magazine — very excited for his new series, “You’re Not a Monster,” which is streaming from IMDb!

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

  • A couple of really bad ass trailers broke this week. Like the one for Bloodshot:

  • But MOST IMPORTANTLY, the Rise of Skywalker trailer:

What’s In My Pocket Friday

November 13, 2015 By AJ Leave a Comment

I’m trying to get some of my blogging mojo back. You know it’s the end of the year when…. But here’s what’s been burning a hole in my pocket these last few weeks.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Influencers vs. Ambassadors vs. Advocates (Oh my!) – Know the difference.
  • In the UK, over 200 celebrities have backed the push for mental health to be treated as seriously as other illnesses. An amazing effort.
  • Star Wars holiday decor? I’m in.
  • I mean, let’s be clear. I CANNOT WAIT FOR NEW STAR WARS.

  • The Most Beautiful Bars in Los Angeles
  • An Eater writer spent a day with the staff of a Panda Express. It’s kind of brilliant.
  • 21 Of The Most Awesome Things To Ever Happen At Target courtesy of Buzzfeed

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • My very considerate friend sent me a video of Tom Hardy playing with puppies. It is all I need in life.
  • Three words, y’all: BACON. STUFFED. WAFFLES.

  • Bringing this whole post full circle? I totally want the Death Star waffle maker.

What's In My Pocket Friday

Earlier this week…

  • I compiled my annual holiday playlist. It’s never too soon, right?
  • I signed up for Reddit Secret Santa again! I love it. Give it a try!

What’s In My Pocket Friday

April 17, 2015 By AJ Leave a Comment

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing the highlights and best of the web with you every Friday!

Pocket enables users to save something they find online for later. I find it especially handy as a Google Chrome extension — I only have to click a button to immediately save something to my pocket. Once something is saved, the content is visible on any device — phone, tablet, computer, and even offline.

Pocket Fridays - Best of the Web

  • Pink shut down some major haters and body shamers with a positive message.
  • Are you watching the Late Late Show with James Corden? It’s fabulous. And this stunt he pulled with Jennifer Hudson is everything.

  • I really can’t recommend Netflix’s Daredevil enough.
  • Blogger Anne Hogan has been posting recipes from vintage cookbooks that are astounding. Ham and bananas? Ew. And also? I CANNOT LOOK AWAY.
  • Even though I’m not a mom, I really appreciated this post from Fit & Awesome about how work-out clothes make you feel, new mom or otherwise.
  • The error page on Hillary Clinton’s website is the best error page ever published.

Pocket Fridays - Best of the web this week!

  • The second teaser trailer for the new Star Wars movie is out and I’ve watched it eleventy billion times.
  • If you are looking for new people to follow on Twitter, might I recommend these three woman whom I had the honor of sharing a panel stage with earlier this week?
    • Diana Alvear, former Today Show correspondent, brilliant brand strategist and media coach
    • Sheena Tahilramani, Co-founder of SVN PR, former member of George W. Bush’s staff
    • Jaclyn Mullen, a creative entrepreneur and all around fabulous human being

Such amazing, talented women — I’m so lucky I get to meet people like this in my profession. #PitchPerfectLA panel was a huge success! Thank you @jaclynmullen @sal_pals @stahilramani and @mburton0214 for the referral!

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • I got on a plane to visit my best friend back east, which is where I am writing from at present. I could not be happier.
  • I accepted a new job offer and cannot wait to tell you more about it!
  • I counted down my Top 20 TV theme songs
  • There was an incredibly awkward moment at Starbucks.
