What’s In My Pocket Friday – Mental Health Awareness Month

May 5, 2017 By AJ Leave a Comment

Mental Health Awareness Month

Well, however odd  a phrase as it may be, happy Mental Health Awareness Month, everyone! In this world of absolute insanity, this seems like an acutely appropriate cause. It’s hard for me to understand why our global community still attaches such a negative stigma to mental health issues.

But since 1949, Mental Health America has led the observance Mental Health Month in May. They believe it’s important to educate people about habits and behaviors that increase the risk of developing or exacerbating mental illnesses, or could be signs of mental health problems themselves. People experience symptoms of mental illnesses differently—and some engage in potentially dangerous or risky behaviors to avoid or cover up symptoms of a potential mental health problem. Sometimes people—especially young people—struggling with mental health concerns develop habits and behaviors that increase the risk of developing or exacerbating mental illnesses, or that could be signs of mental health problems themselves. When we engage in prevention and early identification, we can help reduce the burden of mental illness by identifying symptoms and warning signs early—and provide effective treatment.

What's In My Pocket Friday - Mental Health Awareness Month

How do we reconcile the importance of mental health awareness with the stigmas attached to its challenges? Well, in my opinion, is through education, earnest sentiment, and even a good bit of laughter.

  • Therapy – it works. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Here are 11 perfect tweets about it sourced by Huffington Post.
  • Buzzfeed also has some tweets — also very funny!
  • Laughter actually is the best medicine. Read why here.
  • Are you ready for the best comic strip about depression? Read Hyperbole and a Half’s “Adventures in Depression.”

What's In My Pocket Friday - Mental Health Awareness Month

  • Many years ago, blogger Heather Armstrong wrote a piece about depression I found particularly moving.
  • Also from Buzzfeed — a handy translation guide of sorts. What you say and what you mean.
  • Kevin Breel is important. He’s a stand-up comedian and he needs to talk to you about depression. I will leave you with his words:

Best of the web

I did not go into the office today (hint: I’m writing this on Thursday night) because, well, yesterday I found out I have bursitis in my right shoulder. And while no one can tell without an MRI, the suspicion is that there is a tiny tear in my rotator cuff causing it. And by the way, no idea how I did this. I woke up at 4 AM in excruciating pain and by 2 PM, was leaving work to go to the doctor. My shoulder has been a little achy since Sunday night but this was just suddenly like WHAM. I don’t actually like working from home but I do like not having to spend three hours in the car, so there’s that. But I do have a little cabin fever right now and may just have to take a walk outside when I finish this post.

ANYWAY….

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • I’m speaking at the Dad 2.0 Conference next week and I’m super excited! This is a totally new conference to me and I can’t wait to meet new people, new bloggers and influencers, and drop some knowledge.
  • I know everything is terrible right now and I’m not going to help you with this awful news: BACON RESERVES ARE AT AN ALL-TIME LOW. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! (Did you know we have “bacon reserves?” Where is this place? Wanna go?)
  • Current, new TV obsessions: The Crown (Netflix) and Victoria (PBS Masterpiece). Never thought I’d get into period shows but I LOVE THEM. Clearly every show ever should be about the British Monarchy.

What's In My Pocket Friday - Best of the Web

  • There are many, many adorable dogs you should be following on Instagram. Here’s a good list.
  • Do you happen to follow the sassy Merriam-Webster account on Twitter? You should. Meet the author, Lauren Naturale.
  • You better believe I pre-ordered this gem:
What's In My Pocket Friday - Best of the Web

P.S. You should also buy this. Click here. Comes out Feb. 7.

  • Starbucks’ CEO Howard Schultz announced they would be hiring 10,000 refugees. Amazing.
  • And did you hear what Kal Penn did??? He’s also amazing.
  • Here is a cute baby sloth. Because reasons.

Best of the web — and in the world

Best of the web. Yes, please. Look, the other day I watched our President-elect stand in front of American flags, at a podium, with Trump-branded products like wine and steak to either side of him on display, cruelly mock journalists and refer to the news as “crap.” So I needed to laugh and laugh good before I started to punch things.

Hence this week, you’ll find everything in my Pocket induces laughter. Much, much needed laughter.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • When I got home from work last night, I immediately turned on that day’s episode of “Ellen.” I record it every day and have for years. Sometimes she also makes me cry but at the top of the show, she had my hysterical:

  • If I’ve really gotta force a laugh to get to a place of feeling better, I flip on a comedy special. My favorite these days is John Mulaney’s “The Comeback Kid” on Netflix. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times I watch it — I end up nearly wetting myself. I also watched Joe Rogan’s Netflix special this week and it was a lot funnier than I expected it to be! (See also: John Mulaney’s bit on Donald Trump.)

  • I also find, especially because my drive to and from work is so long, that podcasts can really get me through. Here are a few of my faves:
    • How Did This Get Made
    • My Dad Wrote a Porno
    • Out on the Lanai: A Golden Girls Podcast
  • And speaking of, just plain, old fashioned reruns of the “Golden Girls” still make me laugh my ass off. Can’t see them on Logo, TV Land of Hallmark Channel? THEY ARE COMING TO HULU!

Best of the Web

So what about you? What makes my smile and laugh? Share in the comments so I can join in, please. 😉

What’s In My Pocket Friday – Star Trek Edition!

September 9, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

Best of the web

We are boldly going, y’all. The best of the web – Star Trek things for everyone!

The company I work for is distributing the amazing Nimoy “Spock Doc,” “For The Love of Spock.” It’s directed by Adam Nimoy and shines a spotlight on both his famous father and his father’s most iconic role, Mr. Spock. It’s a warm, wonderful, incredibly well made film and I think even non Star Trek fans would love it. It’s been the MOST fun to work on for PR. The feedback has been stellar and as a lifelong Trekkie, it’s all been a personal joy for me as well. If I’ve intrigued you enough, make sure you check your local listings because it’s out TODAY in select theaters. But if you can’t find it, never fear — it’s also available on demand, on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon. Basically ALL THE THINGS.

As yesterday was the actual 50th anniversary of STAR TREK’s initial premiere, there was a TON of nerd-juice for me to drink in yesterday. This is gonna be the NERDIEST POST EVER. Live long and prosper.

Best of the Web - Star Trek

  • Rick Bentley’s review of my company’s film “For The Love of Spock” is my favorite one because he says it’s a “beautifully crafted salute to a pop culture icon” and it warms my heart. (FYI, it’s 100% on Rotten Tomatoes right now!)
  • OMG this Etsy shop! I am geeking out over it.

Best of the Web - Star Trek

  • Mayim Bialik interviewed Adam Nimoy for her fantastic website, GrokNation. I love this.
  • Jason Alexander is also a well known Trekkie. His trivia clip with Mashable is GREAT!
  • Variety ran a really nice piece with Star Trek family members recounting their favorite episodes.
  • Facebook’s little emoji tribute MADE MY WEEK!

Best of the Web - Star Trek

  • And my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE THINGS? Of course – “Live Long and Paws-per” from ThinkGeek:

What’s In My Pocket Friday

August 12, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

Best of the web

Greetings, everybody! I went to two conventions and on one vacation in just the last week so I am a tired, tired lady, but I am also really excited about my next trip — this coming Wednesday! August is insane. Work is insane. I AM INSANE. 😉 But anyway, I had a moment of clarity and suddenly felt twitchy to get a blog post up. And here is the “Best of the Web” I’ve saved in my “pocket” throughout the madness:

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • OH MY WORD THE OLYMPICS. Why am I crying so much this year?
    • Every time there’s an Olympics, I put together a moving photo tribute. Check it out.
    • Just going on record to say that even though I love the games, NBC’s coverage just blows. Get yer shit together, NBC.
    • Gold Medal gymnast Simone Biles has a life-sized Zac Efron cut-out. I am jealous.
    • This new Under Armour commercial with Michael Phelps gives me ALL THE FEELS! (For added fun, check out the video of his and his fiancee’s reaction to seeing it for the first time.)

  • The wicked geniuses at Cards Against Humanity are selling special expansion packs. One for Hillary, one for Donald. All proceeds go to Clinton’s campaign so I do not care which one you buy.
  • LAist published a list of the best brunch patios in Los Angeles and it’s a FANTASTIC list. It includes my most favorite brunch spot (Cliff’s Edge) and the one I am currently the most eager to try (Terrine).

What's In My Pocket Friday - Best of the Web

  • I saw “Suicide Squad” and it’s legitimately one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. There is about an hour of exposition, we get backstory on some characters and not others, the plot is terribly constructed, the climax is not even that climactic, some of the acting is terrible, and so on from there.  The Hollywood Picture News touched on it.
  • Social Media Club’s August event is going to be a lot of fun! We’re having a debate between in-house, freelance and agency positions. Whose team will you side with? Register here.

Earlier This Week….

  • I wrote a post about some new brunches I love.
  • I recapped BlogHer 2016, which both sucked and didn’t suck.
  • My family lived in a “Manor” and it was awesome. And now I need a vacation to recover from my vacation.

What’s in my Pocket Friday – In the year 2000!

April 8, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

Sort of a metaphorical “pocket” I’m exploring today….

rp_Pocket_Fridays-1024x389.jpg

I was organizing some drawers in my bedroom last night (isn’t that what everyone does at 12:30 when they can’t sleep?) and found a very old diary. And then I was up til 2 AM reading through it. (I am a genius at curing insomnia, apparently.) I purchased it in 2000 in the gift shop of “Il Duomo di Firenze” (The Cathedral of Florence) when I lived there for a semester and documented my life in it for many years afterward (the last post in it is dates 1.3.09).

On one page, I created and filled out my own survey of, well, myself. I wrote: “It will be so fun to look at this in 10 or 15 years to see if I still like the same things.” And it was. In the year 2000, this is what I wrote:

  • Favorite Color: Purple
  • Favorite Meal: Caesar Salad w/ grilled shrimp, side of fries
  • Favorite Music: Counting Crows, Blink 182, Eminem, *NSYNC, Garth Brooks, The Who
  • Favorite Actors: Tim Robbins, Kevin Spacey, Christian Bale, Allison Janney, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Ed Norton, Al Pacino, John Cusack, Joan Allen, Diane Keaton
  • Favorite Movies: Grosse Pointe Blank, The Usual Suspects, Playing by Heart, American Beauty, The Godfather, High Fidelity, Tombstone, Mallrats
  • Favorite Sports Teams: NY Yankees, LA Kings
  • Current Favorite TV Shows: The X-Files, Boston Public, Sex & the City, Will & Grace, ER, Friends, The Practice, The West Wing, Law & Order, Six Feet Under, Ally McBeal
  • Favorite Books: To Kill a Mockingbird, American Psycho, HIgh Fidelity, About a Boy, Fight Club
  • Random Obsessions: The Brat Pack, Michael J. Fox, Tigger, the Internet, Awards Shows, Puppies
  • Hobbies: Collages, building websites, postcard collecting, writing, scrapbooks
  • Celebrity Nemesis: Kate Hudson

And now? Well, much of this we know but just to sync up….

  • Favorite Color: Purple
  • Favorite Meal: Sushi or a great burger with a side of fries
  • Favorite Music: Boy Bands, Garth Brooks, The Who, Sam Hunt, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran
  • Favorite Actors: Kevin Spacey, Allison Janney,  John Cusack, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sam Rockwell, Patrick Stewart, Matt Bomer, Tom Hardy
  • Favorite Movies: Grosse Pointe Blank, The Usual Suspects, Tombstone, Charade
  • Favorite Sports Teams: NY Yankees, LA Kings
  • Current Favorite TV Shows: Law & Order SVU, @Midnight, Outlander, The Flash, Arrow, The Blacklist
  • Favorite Books: To Kill a Mockingbird, American Psycho, High Fidelity, Yes Please
  • Random Obsessions: Boy Bands, Brunch, Tigger, Awards Shows, Puppies
  • Hobbies: Blogging, postcard collecting, writing, cleaning out my drawers in the middle of the night (apparently)
  • Celebrity Nemeses: Kate Hudson, LL Cool J

I am both delighted and appalled that not much has changed. 😉

The Best of the web

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing the best of the web with you every Friday! Even on a holiday. I am that dedicated.

Pocket enables users to save something they find online for later. I find it especially handy as a Google Chrome extension — I only have to click a button to immediately save something to my pocket. Once something is saved, the content is visible on any device — phone, tablet, computer, and even offline.

  • I’ve used Blue Apron for the latter half of 2015 but have recently been thinking I should try some of their competitors. Then Chris, the “Sustainable Dad,” published this amazing review of six food delivery services – I love it!
  • My friend Chris of “What I Run Into” fame tipped me off to this addicting little online shop for dog fanatics like me. MUST HAVE ALL THE THINGS.

What's In My Pocket Friday - Crazy Dog Lady

  • Speaking of dogs, how about this list of all the cutest Golden Retrievers ever?!
  • A friend posted this New York Times piece on Facebook — about wearing headphones on the workplace. If you know me, you know I love a good pair of headphones and this article totally reveals one of the reasons why. 😉
  • This recipe for HOT. CHOCOLATE. CAKE.

What's In My Pocket Friday - Hot Chocolate Cake, "The First Year Blog"

  • I had an inexplicable aversion to John Mulaney but somehow found myself watching his Netflix special and OMG it’s great. Please watch it.
  • Here are the Bill Nye reaction GIFs you didn’t know you needed.
  • I must share DJ Earworm’s annual pop mash-up:

  • Also loved the YouTube 2015 Rewind:

Earlier this week…

  • I opened up a giveaway on my other site
  • I recapped 2015 and committed to my goals for 2016
  • I also recapped the best sound bytes of 2015 – one of my favorite posts!
  • And I posted this quick recap Flipagram that I rather enjoy:

What’s In My Pocket Friday

November 13, 2015 By AJ Leave a Comment

I’m trying to get some of my blogging mojo back. You know it’s the end of the year when…. But here’s what’s been burning a hole in my pocket these last few weeks.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Influencers vs. Ambassadors vs. Advocates (Oh my!) – Know the difference.
  • In the UK, over 200 celebrities have backed the push for mental health to be treated as seriously as other illnesses. An amazing effort.
  • Star Wars holiday decor? I’m in.
  • I mean, let’s be clear. I CANNOT WAIT FOR NEW STAR WARS.

  • The Most Beautiful Bars in Los Angeles
  • An Eater writer spent a day with the staff of a Panda Express. It’s kind of brilliant.
  • 21 Of The Most Awesome Things To Ever Happen At Target courtesy of Buzzfeed

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • My very considerate friend sent me a video of Tom Hardy playing with puppies. It is all I need in life.
  • Three words, y’all: BACON. STUFFED. WAFFLES.

  • Bringing this whole post full circle? I totally want the Death Star waffle maker.

What's In My Pocket Friday

Earlier this week…

  • I compiled my annual holiday playlist. It’s never too soon, right?
  • I signed up for Reddit Secret Santa again! I love it. Give it a try!

  • Who watched Colbert’s new show? Frankly, I didn’t like it. But I like him so I hope he figured it out.
  • The iPhone is finally getting an important emoji update. Finally coming: taco, burrito, unicorn….

What's in my pocket Friday - New Emojis

  • All of the nachos you could ever want in LA. I think is pretty important.
  • The next Social Media Club event is about PINTEREST – I am SO EXCITED!
  • Justin Timberlake and his baby. I die.

  • I think Tara’s post about depression and anxiety is really well written.
  • Also, Zelda Williams said some rather breathtaking things on the anniversary of her father’s suicide.
  • This article about email is great. I’m an email junkie. I’m super compulsive about it.
  • I love BBC Radio 1 covers. Demi Lovato singing Hozier’s “Take me to Church” is amazing:

Earlier this week….

  • I wrote about some less-fancy brunch spots I love
  • Tig Notaro favorited a joke I tweeted at her. Life made.

What’s in my Pockey Friday: Independence Day Edition

Best of the Web This Week - Pocket Fridays

  • This recipe for BROWN BUTTER ICE CREAM SANDWICHES sent me into another stratosphere.
  • I saw Magic Mike XXL last night with a hoard of friends. It was everything I needed it to be. This review is fabulous but be warned it has spoilers.

The Best of the web this week - Pocket Fridays

  • A great list from Thrillist – 22 Essential LA Apps.
  • Thrillist also broke down some stellar new restaurants and bars that just opened in LA.
  • I caught this video of Wil Wheaton discussing his struggles with anxiety disorder and depression. I thought it was authentic and wonderful. Snaps to the former Mr. Crusher.

And HEY! It’s Independence Day Weekend so here’s a special section dedicated to the upcoming Presidential Election!

  • There are approximately eleventy billion people running for President and my favorite changes daily based on what idiot moment is trending in the news.
  • Ted Cruz thought his horrible Simpsons impressions would serve him well — Jon Stewart thought differently. I’m clearly going to have to record The Daily Show every night now.
  • Bobby Jindal, who announced his candidacy via nanny cam, had an embarrassing Twitter Q&A.
  • Donald Trump is basically pissing everyone off. Like, everyone. He’s second in the GOP poll but with more than a dozen candidates diluting the survey population, who gives a shit?
  • Marco Rubio is selling… (wait for it)… MARCO POLOS. Ted Cruz totally missed an opportunity to brand his coozies as CRUZIES, you guys. #FAIL

The Best of the web this week - Pocket FridaysEarlier This Week…

  • Facebook messed with their algorithm again.
  • I listened to Chris Pratt’s Nerdist Podcast episode. It’s stupendous. Listen to it.
  • I was mentioned in Deadline, which is weird but exciting.
