FRIDAY FAVORITES: THE FIRST OF 2020! OH MY!

February 8, 2020 By AJ Leave a Comment

Friday Favorites – we’re back! Here we are in a brand-spanking-new year. Hope everyone’s 2020 is off to a great start.

Friday Favorites

WHAT I READ

  • I was very happy to read that Netflix will now let you disable its awful autoplaying feature. THANK YOU, NETFLIX!
  • I’ve been doing a “home edit” so I’ve been reading a lot of articles about organizing small spaces. This one with kitchen tips was great.
  • The New York Times wrote a lovely profile of my next door neighboring town, Burbank.
  • Did you see Knives Out? I thought it was so much fun. I was excited to read they are making a sequel.

FRIDAY FAVORITES: THE FIRST OF 2020! OH MY!

OTHER BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

  • My trailer-judging colleagues and I at The Hollywood Picture News spilled some tea on this week’s new films.
  • Talk about putting in the work so you don’t have to — Greeblehaus assembled a master list of music festivals any fan will want to bookmark.
  • The Kitchn put up this pizza dip recipe and I am going to try it on Sunday when some friends come over to watch the Oscars.
  • Life Hacker suggested adding pancake batter to your scrambled eggs…. How do we feel about that, kids?

FRIDAY FAVORITES: THE FIRST OF 2020! OH MY!nives

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • My favorite bookstore opened a wine shop INSIDE THE STORE. I plan to move in. Please forward my mail.
  • Trump failed at geography but Claire McCaskill won at Twitter:

FRIDAY FAVORITES: THE FIRST OF 2020! OH MY!

  • I spoke on a panel hosted by the LA chapter of PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) called “How Social Media is Disrupting PR.” It was a lot of fun! I often book engagements like this because I learn so much from my co-panelists. This was certainly the case here.

PR & SOCIAL MEDIA

  • I am proud that a film I am working on, Incitement, is earning an absolute ton of praise, including this flattering review from the LA Times’ Senior Critic Kenneth Turan. It is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, too!!!
  • I am even MORE proud to say that Bill and Hillary Clinton attended a screening of this movie in New York. Just a couple out for a date night. Why not, right? This totally decreases the Kevin-Bacon-degrees between us all and I am happy.

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

  • Rebel Wilson just went ahead and stole the BAFTAs. Her intro here is just genius. And the audience reactions are priceless all around. Andrew Scott (“Fleabag”) straight up cries.

  • These were my favorite Super Bowl commercials:

Friday Favorites – From the Surface of the Sun

August 3, 2018 By AJ Leave a Comment

It’s too hot for words this week. This month. This Summer. Climate change deniers, you can kiss my….. well, you know where to find it. I have learned now that having a dog means I don’t get to stay inside all day with my sweet, sweet A/C. The pup needs to be walked. But sunblock is my new BFF. Also this goofy little fan I bought to plug into my iPhone! But onto the Friday Favorites:

Friday Favorites - From the Surface of the Sun

WHAT I READ

  • There is a slow-but-steady renaissance happening here in Los Angeles, downtown, where a lot of the old buildings are being purchased and renovated. Apple is doing a pretty cool thing with the old Tower Theater.
  • Would you see a movie starring Margot Robbie, Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman? I WOULD.
  • My friend Meghan took me to Crossroads, a vegetarian restaurant, and I am IN LOVE. So I liked this article listing some other fantastic veggie spots around town.

Friday Favorites - From the Surface of the Sun

  • Here are 22 things you probably didn’t know about Walt Disney World.
  • And here are some pretty unique hotels. I’d like to visit all of them.

OTHER BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

  • Pinch of Yum’s recipe for fried chicken sandwiches has me feeling ALL THE FEELINGS. OMIGOD. These looks SO GOOD.
  • Not to mention A Beautiful Mess posted this recipe for chocolate covered cherry cookies. I am not a chocolate person but I do have a weakness for it with cherry anything.
  • These savvy ladies are launching a female-focused podcasting network. I am here for it.

PR & SOCIAL MEDIA

  • Facebook is making navigating their app a little more personal. It’s a smart idea. Personally, I never use the marketplace — I don’t need that on my nav bar. But I’d love faster access to some other things I frequent.
  • Buzzfeed is launching a “real news” website. I sure hope they will not include “listicles.”
  • How about a list of Instagram hacks? These articles usually underwhelm me but this one is actually pretty strong.

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • The Boston Globe profiled one of my clients, a docu-series called “We the People.” It anchors this column.
  • I saw the movie Blindspotting. It was AMAZING. So unique. Go see it.

Friday Favorites - From the Surface of the Sun

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

  • Uh…. Netflix announced a new series. Starring Tony Danza and Josh Groban. I mean, if that pairing does’t grab you….

  • This dog who stole a GoPro is pretty much the reason the GoPro was invented. If you don’t smile and/or laugh watching this, there is no hope for you, I’m sorry.

What’s In My Pocket Friday

January 13, 2017 By AJ Leave a Comment

Best of the web — and in the world

Best of the web. Yes, please. Look, the other day I watched our President-elect stand in front of American flags, at a podium, with Trump-branded products like wine and steak to either side of him on display, cruelly mock journalists and refer to the news as “crap.” So I needed to laugh and laugh good before I started to punch things.

Hence this week, you’ll find everything in my Pocket induces laughter. Much, much needed laughter.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • When I got home from work last night, I immediately turned on that day’s episode of “Ellen.” I record it every day and have for years. Sometimes she also makes me cry but at the top of the show, she had my hysterical:

  • If I’ve really gotta force a laugh to get to a place of feeling better, I flip on a comedy special. My favorite these days is John Mulaney’s “The Comeback Kid” on Netflix. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times I watch it — I end up nearly wetting myself. I also watched Joe Rogan’s Netflix special this week and it was a lot funnier than I expected it to be! (See also: John Mulaney’s bit on Donald Trump.)

  • I also find, especially because my drive to and from work is so long, that podcasts can really get me through. Here are a few of my faves:
    • How Did This Get Made
    • My Dad Wrote a Porno
    • Out on the Lanai: A Golden Girls Podcast
  • And speaking of, just plain, old fashioned reruns of the “Golden Girls” still make me laugh my ass off. Can’t see them on Logo, TV Land of Hallmark Channel? THEY ARE COMING TO HULU!

Best of the Web

So what about you? What makes my smile and laugh? Share in the comments so I can join in, please. 😉

What’s In My Pocket Friday

Best of the web — and in the world

Best of the web? Yes. Best of the world? That, also. I reached a tipping point this week when I was watching some ass-clown I refuse to reference by name at a white supremacist meeting (Call it what you want, National Policy Institute) give a speech that essentially set civil rights and basic, human ethics back 100 years. The next day I watched another bigot announce to his “conservative” brothers and sisters that they needed to boycott Target because of their extreme leftist policies — you know, the ones that embrace diversity and compassion. (And by the by, I am filled with warmth seeing how many people liked and shared this tweet yesterday and today. Keep up the good work!)

I realized that today, tomorrow and in the days following, I need to keep my focus on some of the good in the world because there is plenty of it left, no matter how the news makes us feel. So please know that while I am still filled with the fire of a thousand suns, in this little pocket of the universe, in this moment, there is only goodness and warmth.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Take a moment and watch just a little of the ceremony held at The WHite House this week wherein President Obama gave out 21 Presidential Medals of Freedom. President Obama has given out more of these Medals than any other President in our history.

What's In My Pocket Friday - Best of the Web

  • You may not recall, but three years ago, President George H.W. Bush shaved his head in solidarity with a young boy, Patrick, who was battling Leukemia. Now three years later, former President Bush has let everyone know on Twitter that Patrick is better!
  • Michael J. Fox joined Dave Matthews on stage at a recent show to raise money for Parkinson’s Disease research… and banged out an impressive guitar solo:

  • Meet Ed Moseley, an 86-year-old grandfather in Georgia, who doesn’t believe you are ever too old to learn something new. He recently taught himself to knit so he could make caps for premature newborns.
  • Get ready for pure, complete joy. This mom surprised her children with a puppy adoption.

And if that doesn’t do it, more goodness…

  • COMEDY IS GOOD! Putting some good old-fashioned pragmatism to work here, I realized that if I need a laugh, I just need to watch something funny, right? I’ve been watching the hell out of comedy specials on Netflix. John Mulaney’s is my favorite.

  • MUSIC IS GOOD! Especially holiday music. I do recognize that first, it’s early, and second, some people are not the type to listen to this music too much nor too often, but for me, bring it. It cheers me right up. I create a playlist for holiday music every year on Spotify and working on the playlist alone brings a smile to my face.
  • PUPPIES ARE GOOD! Kittens are also welcome. Please see BUZZFEED ANIMALS for all the cuteness you will ever need and more. I subscribe to their “puppy a day” newsletter and I love to read this page for a pick-me-up. Like this story about “Quantico” star Priyanka Chopra who liked the puppies at her Buzzfeed photoshoot so much, she just adopted one of them on the spot.

Just to be clear, I’m not trying to diminish how messed up things are right now. Because they are. And I promise I will not sit idly by and do nothing about it. Sometimes I get indescribably furious and sometimes I just cry. But most of the time, I allow what I am feeling to empower and inspire me. Here is a good site that may do the same for you (but if you don’t like curse words, stay away). I admire my strong friends who are taking a big stand and have jumped full-throttle into activism (read this – GO MEGHAN!). But for these few minutes spent writing (and for you, reading) this post, everything was positive — I think it’s important we remember things like these are happening. Now more than ever.

What’s In My Pocket Friday

The Best of the web

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing the highlights with you every Friday!

Pocket enables users to save something they find online for later. I find it especially handy as a Google Chrome extension — I only have to click a button to immediately save something to my pocket. Once something is saved, the content is visible on any device — phone, tablet, computer, and even offline.

Pocket Fridays - Best of the Web

  • My trip to New York was really a trip to New Jersey because once I stepped into my best friend’s home there, I felt warm, cozy and loved and hardly wanted to leave. However I’m afraid this means most of my vacation photos are of her dogs.

Best of the Web - Pocket Fridays

  • When I did go into the city, I saw an absolutely magnificent Broadway musical called Fun Home. I won’t tell you what it’s about. It’s layered and complicated and beautiful and amazing. The talent in it is beyond amazing.

Best of the Web - Pocket Fridays

  • Apparently people still care about Grey’s Anatomy. I stopped watching when Izzy started hallucinating. But I think everyone who posted spoilers on Facebook in real time last night stinks. Not nice, people.
  • London knows how to properly celebrate their icons. Look how they paid tribute to Monty Python.
  • This journalist wears the same thing to work every day and I think she’s amazing.
  • Blogger Chris Lam tells us how NOT to get a bikini bod. God bless her.
  • I caught onto this genius Thug Kitchen cookbook commercial. “I love to cook good food but who has the fucking time….”

  • I thought this was great from PR Daily: “Five Pitches That Journalists Don’t Care About“
  • Terrific interview in the NY Times with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. Have you watched Daredevil? It’s amazing.
  • This video made the rounds — Pandora Jewelry gathered a group of children, aged three to nine, and their mothers to participate in a simple experiment that basically left me in a puddle of warm n’ fuzzy tears.

  • Trailer’s out for the new Kurt Cobain documentary and both 1993 me and present day me are totally in.
  • I’ve decided to pay more attention to my Tumblr, which I’ve let fall behind.
  • I re-watched Wet Hot American Summer this week. It’s been playing on cable. Make sure you see this movie before the Netflix series comes out.
  • I went for a walk the other day and found myself in jewelry designer Alisa Michelle’s shop and it was lovely. A lot of affordable, chic, beautiful pieces, and some really clever collections.

  • My new crack is the Cinefix “Things You Didn’t Know” channel.
  • Brunch is my favorite meal and my friend sent me a little history on it. I love this.
  • Y’all know I love the comic book TV & film stuff and the Netflix trailer for Daredevil is a masterpiece unto itself.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Am I the last one to discover Boomerang for Gmail?
  • I loved this article from Inc., “What I’ve Learned From 20 Jobs in 20 Years.”
  • Ryan. Gosling. Dancing. Age 12. You’re welcome.

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • Apparently we’ve finally crossed the line – there really are apps for everything
  • I reviewed a fabulous restaurant in Pasadena
  • I pinned the most stunning Louboutains I’ve ever seen
  • I reviewed Disney’s Cinderella for Misflix
