FRIDAY FAVORITES: THE FIRST OF 2020! OH MY!

February 8, 2020 By AJ Leave a Comment

Friday Favorites – we’re back! Here we are in a brand-spanking-new year. Hope everyone’s 2020 is off to a great start.

Friday Favorites

WHAT I READ

  • I was very happy to read that Netflix will now let you disable its awful autoplaying feature. THANK YOU, NETFLIX!
  • I’ve been doing a “home edit” so I’ve been reading a lot of articles about organizing small spaces. This one with kitchen tips was great.
  • The New York Times wrote a lovely profile of my next door neighboring town, Burbank.
  • Did you see Knives Out? I thought it was so much fun. I was excited to read they are making a sequel.

FRIDAY FAVORITES: THE FIRST OF 2020! OH MY!

OTHER BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

  • My trailer-judging colleagues and I at The Hollywood Picture News spilled some tea on this week’s new films.
  • Talk about putting in the work so you don’t have to — Greeblehaus assembled a master list of music festivals any fan will want to bookmark.
  • The Kitchn put up this pizza dip recipe and I am going to try it on Sunday when some friends come over to watch the Oscars.
  • Life Hacker suggested adding pancake batter to your scrambled eggs…. How do we feel about that, kids?

FRIDAY FAVORITES: THE FIRST OF 2020! OH MY!nives

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • My favorite bookstore opened a wine shop INSIDE THE STORE. I plan to move in. Please forward my mail.
  • Trump failed at geography but Claire McCaskill won at Twitter:

FRIDAY FAVORITES: THE FIRST OF 2020! OH MY!

  • I spoke on a panel hosted by the LA chapter of PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) called “How Social Media is Disrupting PR.” It was a lot of fun! I often book engagements like this because I learn so much from my co-panelists. This was certainly the case here.

PR & SOCIAL MEDIA

  • I am proud that a film I am working on, Incitement, is earning an absolute ton of praise, including this flattering review from the LA Times’ Senior Critic Kenneth Turan. It is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, too!!!
  • I am even MORE proud to say that Bill and Hillary Clinton attended a screening of this movie in New York. Just a couple out for a date night. Why not, right? This totally decreases the Kevin-Bacon-degrees between us all and I am happy.

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

  • Rebel Wilson just went ahead and stole the BAFTAs. Her intro here is just genius. And the audience reactions are priceless all around. Andrew Scott (“Fleabag”) straight up cries.

  • These were my favorite Super Bowl commercials:

Friday Favorites: May Day, May Day!

May 19, 2017 By AJ 1 Comment

This week in the news, Trump is shouting to anyone who’s listening (or reading his twitter dribble) that he feels remarkably persecuted — the most hated and hunted President ever, he believes. Let’s not ask Lincoln and Kennedy how they feel about that verdict.

I am proud to announce that I am NOT being investigated by a special prosecutor. So I’m winning at life.

Anyway….

Friday Favorites

WHAT I READ

  • Did anyone else read “Where’d You Go Bernadette” by Maria Semple? I enjoyed it and was excited to hear they’re making it into a movie — and the casting thus far is perfection.
  • I have been following this year’s TV Upfronts with vigor. Oddly, not many new shows I am excited for this Fall, but I think there will still be a couple big winners.
  • Someone shared this with me — “The 100 Most Iconic Dogs in Movies“. I looked through every. single. one.

Friday Favorites: May Day, May Day! / Tom Hardy in "The Drop"

OTHER BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

  • Carolyn posted a recipe for S’mores Parfaits. When I read it, I literally shouted out loud, “SOLD!”
  • Jessica keeps saying she’s retired from blogging. She is a lying liar who lies. Also, she is insightful about important subject matters
  • Chris reviewed a diaper bag that I maintain would be an excellent bag for a working professional who travels a lot. I kind of want a diaper bag, guys.

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • I attended this great panel at the TV Academy called “Unstoppable Women.” It showcased amazing female talent working with the Lifetime channel. And then I met Constance Zimmer, who could not have been nicer. She is one of my favorite actresses. I was THRILLED!
  • I attended the Grand Opening of the new Fresh Brothers in Burbank. I’m ECSTATIC they opened one in delivery distance to my home! I’ve been very patient and now I’ve been rewarded. Thank you, FB, (P.S. Click over to their site and sign up for their club so you get 10% off every order!)

Friday Favorites: May Day, May Day! / Fresh Brothers Pizza in Burbank

Fresh Brothers’ artichoke chicken pesto pizza – it’s amazing.

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

  • Harry Styles and Niall Horan (formerly of One Direction) are giving their solo careers the hard core press this week. I’m not gonna lie to you — it ain’t bad stuff if you like pop music like I do.
  • I discovered a short film I loved. I never think about watching short films but I saw this filmmaker speak at the aforementioned panel and it’s GREAT.

Coming off the @TelevisionAcad panel last night I immediately rented @GertShap‘s #SequinRaze on @Vimeo. SO. AWESOME. https://t.co/rBZ6JlxqXJ

— (((AJ Feuerman))) (@ajfeuerman) May 17, 2017

  • Stephen Amell (“Arrow”) tackles the American Ninja Warrior course for “Red Nose Day” and nails it, obviously.
  • I’ll just conclude “Friday Favorites” with this. Chris Cornell’s best acoustic performances. He was magnificent and I am sad.

Brunch Doesn’t Need to be Fancy to be Delicious

Brunch Doesn't Need to be Fancy to be Delicious - Nat's Early Bite

Delicious brunch need not be fancy, nor need it be expensive. Hear me out. Just because I am the Queen of Brunch does not mean I assign a price minimum or dress code requirement to the activity. Truth be told, I love me a good greasy spoon or diner. So here are a few I highly recommend.

NAT’S EARLY BITE – SHERMAN OAKS [website]

Set in a rather slummy strip mall on the edge of Sherman Oaks,  Nat’s Early Bite (pictured above) offers nothing in decor but more than makes up for it with a huge menu, charming staff who’s probably treated like family by the owners, and great prices.

Eggs Benedict? $9.95. Two eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast? $9.25. And we’re talkin’ those good, O.G. hash browns. Not potatoes, not “home fries,” HASH BROWNS. French toast with eggs and bacon? $9.50.

Brunch Doesn't Need to be Fancy to be Delicious - Nat's Early Bite

Stop by and don’t let the outside scare you. It’s clean, it’s delicious, and it opens at 6 AM. Tell your brunch buddies you’ve found a real gem set aside from all the celebrity chefs trying to outdo one another with gluten-free Tahitian vanilla waffles with a light berry compote or housemade apple sausage over fennel with a lump crab egg whites scramble (and I did not make those dishes up, guys). Sometimes, dammit, you just want bacon and eggs and refillable coffee.

BEABEA’s – BURBANK [website]

Brace yourself. It’s pretty hard to go to BeaBea’s without waiting for a table. But you might try your luck at an “off hour” and see where that gets you. Regardless, it’s worth it because HOLY CRAP PANCAKES.

Brunch Doesn't Need to be Fancy to be Delicious - BeaBea'sOn the pancakes menu:

  • Apple Cobbler: Baked apples & almonds on buttermilk pancakes
  • Chocolate Tuxedo: Chocolate chips & brownie pieces topped with mascarpone cream, whipped cream & powdered sugar
  • S’mores Pancakes: Graham crackers, marshmallows & chocolate chip pancakes
  • House signature, golden pumpkin pancakes
  • Matcha green tea pancakes, green tea mascarpone, white chocolate chips & whipped cream

I’m just giving you a thorough tour but I promise you can’t go wrong here with just a plain stack of buttermilk pancakes. Nor can you go wrong with their french toast – just as many crazy choices here – or simply eggs, bacon, etc. Not quite the greasy spoon you’re looking at with Nat’s; it’s a little more well-kempt, but you’re not in Beverly Hills either – there is not an ounce of pretension in the place.

Pro-tip: Like I said, you’ll wait for a table and there’s not really anywhere to wait except outside, which trickles into the parking lot. If it’s hot, this could suck. Dress accordingly, bring sunscreen and sunglasses. I’m not even joking! I came home from BeaBea’s with a sunburn the first time I went. Of course, I’m also a pasty white broad who burns faster than toast. Also, if you don’t care where you sit (i.e. the makeshift outdoor seating or the counter), you’ll get seated a lot faster.

JINKY’S STUDIO CAFE – STUDIO CITY [website]

I’m not really sure what the history is here. Originally named just “Studio Cafe” but owned by the rather famous Jinky’s Cafe guys, maybe they were trying to establish a new brand? But I don’t think the place ever really drew a crowd til they threw “Jinky’s” up on the sign, changed the umbrellas and then BOOM.

Brunch Doesn't Need to be Fancy to be Delicious - Jinky's Studio Cafe

You’ll wait here as well and what’s more, be warned that parking BLOWS. Find a street spot in the nearby neighborhoods and walk there. Thank me later.

So you’re basically getting a BeaBea’s redux here — lots of crazy pancake dishes to choose from, including the amazing, decadent red velvet pancakes that lead Jinky’s to breakfast fame — but with some added bonuses. For starters, TATER TOTS. And if you prefer, sweet potato tater tots. (I’m the only person in Los Angeles that hates sweet potatoes but I know that’s weird.)

Brunch Doesn't Need to be Fancy to be Delicious - Studio Cafe

Studio Cafe also has a proper patio. And even though you’re on a busy corner, it manages to be kind of private, intimate and quiet. They also discourage cell phone use, which I kinda dig, even though it gives me the shakes. But nothing cures the shakes more than a good mimosa, and of all the places mentioned here, Studio Cafe is the only one with a FULL BAR, so that’s a terrific perk! They also have TVs in case there’s a major sporting event you don’t want to miss and they’re open late (10 PM, 11 PM Thursday – Sunday) in case you get a late night breakfast craving, because it’s served all day and night!

(Note: They do post signs discouraging cell phones but I also found out they offer free WiFi so your guess is as good as mine, kids.)

SO WHAT’S MISSING?

I kept this list to my neighborhood but there are plenty of other, similar spots across town like Cici’s in Tarzana or even Du-par’s, which has a few locations – even one in Las Vegas (they’re only ok but they’re open 24 hours which probably serves them well in a town where very little else is). If you’ve got a great diner in mind that I should add to my bookmarks, please share it in the comments! I love to expand my brunch database!

New to Toluca Lake: The Continental

March 6, 2015 By AJ Leave a Comment

You would not know coming into the warm, elegant setting at The Continental in Toluca Lake that when the building opened in 1958, it was, in fact, an IHOP.

The Continental Toluca Lake

It has been many things since, but yes, it started as the International House of Pancakes. (And let’s all be thankful because I have a long, storied relationship with IHOP myself and if I never enter one again it will be too soon. But I digress. Stories for another time and after certain family members are dead.)

Onto the cocktails, though. OMIGOD. My favorite was the Christopher Oaxacan, a cocktail that is both fun to say (even though I can’t actually say it) and even more fun to drink. In addition to pineapple juice, lime juice and agave nectar, it has mezcal in it; which I recently learned the hard way is not Tequila.

The Continental Toluca Lake - Christopher Oaxacan

Beer and wine have a presence on the menu but my money’s remains on all of the amazing cocktails. When someone puts that much effort into a craft cocktail offering, you almost have to honor their art. They even got me to try a Bourbon cocktail – something I never do. Bourbon sets my nose-hairs on fire. (You’re welcome for that imagery.)

May I recommend the patio for enjoying some cocktails? It was my favorite part of the renovated interior.

The Continental Toluca Lake - Patio

The new menu includes decadent, complex flavors in choices such as Thai Seafood Bouillabaisse, a stew of fresh shrimp, scallops, calamari and vegetables, cooked in a creamy coconut, lemongrass and kaffir lime broth. I had a tiny bite — it was not nearly enough. However my favorite amuse-bouche was the slider version of their Continental Burger, served with prime Angus beef, crispy pancetta, tempura-fried dill pickles and white cheddar cheese. I’m a giant sucker for white cheddar.

The Continental Toluca Lake

As a whole the menu is quite diverse and even changes things up for lunch. Some of the dishes manage to be both French and Thai inspired. They even manage Jewish-Vietnamese somehow as they feature their slow-roasted brisket in a Vietnamese Style Banh Mi. You’ll find salmon, chicken, vegetarian options, salads, sandwiches. I’ve said it before — the worst part about writing these posts is that they make me hungry and that’s never been more true than now.

The Continental Toluca Lake

You know, I could eat Brussels Sprouts every day. True story.

When the awesome staffers were not hugging me hello or introducing themselves, I stepped aside to admire the centerpiece of Continental’s décor, a new, five-panel/35-foot wide mural depicting Toluca Lake that wraps around the walls throughout the front rooms.

The Continental Toluca Lake

It’s a nice tribute to the history of the establishment and if you look closely at it, you will spot a tiny flag with a Mo’s logo — Mo’s was the most recent and rather cherished tenant of the space. The owner remains the same, though — so I am able to make peace with the transition.

Also because it is delicious. 😉

More:

  •     Official website
  •     All of the socials – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
  •     Street parking available,, which I would recommend first. The valet lot in the back is tiny.

P.S. (Congrats to them on landing on Eater LA’s “Hottest New Restaurants” list.)
