FRIDAY FAVORITES: TIS THE SEASON

December 20, 2019 By AJ Leave a Comment

Friday Favorites – we’re back! Oof. Guys, I’ve been MIA for a bit but still bookmark things to share so apologies in advance, but there is a healthy handful of internet gems to behold here.

Friday Favorites

WHAT I READ

  • I can’t say I “read” this, but I WANT IT — Golden Girls wrapping paper!
  • This article about two Auschwitz lovers/survivors who reunited 72 years later gave me ALL THE FEELINGS.
  • If you need it – and I did – this TED Talk about living with grief is really wonderful. It also lead me to the speaker’s podcast, which I’ve been enjoying.
  • Podcasting is going mainstream, says FORBES. Says everyone who knows: DUH.

OTHER BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

  • Spoon Fork Bacon is giving me life with this caramelized pear tart.
  • And how do we feel about a toffee apple dip? I think I’d give it a shot.
  • I didn’t set out to make this such a recipe-heavy week but damn this lemon-dill salmon looks TASTY.
  • The 12is Style gave out a great list of winter coats in plus sizes. I really need a new coat but keep procrastinating the purchase… Sigh. And BTW, you should follow this blogger on Insta. She’s great.
  • Amy takes such gorgeous photos of concerts but most of the time, I am not hip enough to know the bands. This time, she photographed ONE OF MY FAVES!

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • I finished my holiday shopping. HOORAY! I also added like 92 things to my Amazon wishlist. Like this poncho — can I pull this off?
  • I started researching vacationing in Naples, Florida. Here’s why.
  • I added to The Hollywood Picture News’ weekly wrap-up of film trailers. Always enjoy doing it! Especially because I got to make fun of CATS which looks ABOMINABLE. Please enjoy.
  • This heart-warming, festive moment went viral:

PR & SOCIAL MEDIA

  • I participated in this article, predicting video content trends in 2020.

FRIDAY FAVORITES: TIS THE SEASON

  • If you are into the chaos of the streaming wars (like me), this is a must-read.
  • This is such a PR WIN. Behold the case study of Chris Evans’ cable knit sweater in Knives Out.

FRIDAY FAVORITES: TIS THE SEASON

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

  • I am massively obsessed with Harry Styles’ cover of Lizzo’s “Juice” for BBC1:

  • And here’s a real treat — a while back I witnessed James Corden and Eddie Redmayne shoot a bit for his late-night show in an iconic deli here in Los Angeles. Well, it finally aired and if you pay close attention, you can see me checking my phone…. (about 2:28 and fun Hollywood-esque fact, they shot this twice.)

Friday Favorites – All Dem Apples

October 28, 2017 By AJ Leave a Comment

Friday Favorites - All Dem Apples

Last weekend, I traveled to the far and distant land (anything more than 20 minutes away is “far and distant” in Los Angeles) of Yucaipa to pick apples with friends at the Willowbrook Orchard. It was absolutely delightful despite hot weather and long lines. It’s not something I would have ventured out to do a year ago, but about 115 pounds later, I like being outdoors more often and no longer worry about passing out from the simple “burden” of breathing. It’s not without hiccups (I did have to take a beat during the day to catch my breath and get some water rather urgently) but it’s still a lot of growth for me from which I derive more pride than I ever thought I would feel.

Friday Favorites - All Dem ApplesWHAT I READ

  • Well, not read, but found… Someone published this “Push Trump off a cliff” thing that cracks me up. Someone on my Facebook page commented that it wasn’t cool — I replied that being a racist and misogynist is not cool but that this amused me.
  • This woman takes selfies with men who catcall her to make an important point.
  • Food critic Jonathan Gold released “100 Best Restaurants.” This is my porn.

OTHER BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

  • Fit & Awesome got to sample True Food Kitchen’s new Fall menu. Looks delicious!
  • Speaking of delicious, how about Black Out Waffle Cone Cannoli with Sweet Cherry Pastry Cream? Done.
  • The Curvy Fashionista just crushed it this week. Loved every post this week so I’m just linking to her.

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • I enjoyed compiling a list of my favorite news e-newsletters. Did you catch it?
  • I went to another Hanson concert. It was the best one yet. Don’t judge me — they are AWESOME.
  • Here’s my crew before we went into the Orchard. Apples ahoy!

What’s in my Pocket Friday

April 1, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

What’s in my pocket this Friday? Well, a myriad of things, my friends. I am just so happy to be here!

Seven movies in six weeks, y’all. And I SURVIVED. I am tired but I SURVIVED. And I hope I have more energy to blog moving forward because I miss you guys!

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • BRUNCHCON, guys. It is coming. I was one of the first people to know about it but I love that everyone posted it on my Facebook wall, tweeted it to me, emailed it to me, etc. You bet yer sweet arse I’ll be there.
  • Social Media Club is hosting a funeral for blogging. Is blogging actually dead? No, I don’t think so but it’s certainly not what it used to be and the discussion should be riveting.

What's in my Pocket Friday - SMCLA

  • Here are 16 perfect places to get pie in Los Angeles. I have been to many but I will certainly aim to go to all. #LifeGoals
  • ModCloth has signed an Anti-Photoshop pledge and I think that’s so fantastic. I love their brand already and now I just want to hug them.
  • Someone laid down Warren G and Nate Dogg’s “Regulate” as if Bert and Ernie are singing it and it is AH-MA-ZING.

  • I covered a PaleyFest  event for Forces of Geek and was reminded of the piece I wrote about Fan Q&As being THE WORST.
  • I discovered the most wonderful independent movie theater in Phoenix. If you are ever there, you absolutely have to go to FilmBar.
  • Hanson’s “MMMBop” turned 20 YEARS OLD! OMG! They did a great interview but you know I have to post the video:

Earlier this week….

  • My company acquired a new bromantic comedy!
  • I reviewed a new burger joint.
  • Trump continues to upset me. Which is an understatement.
  • And by the way, I LAUNCHED A NEWSLETTER! Sign up!

Seven Reasons I Still Love Hanson

September 14, 2015 By AJ 1 Comment

Yes, you read that title right. I do. I do still love Hanson, “MmmBop” n’ all.

A few years ago, I managed the PR campaign for a film — the music playing over the opening scene was super catchy and I simply had to know who sang it. Once I got my hands on the soundtrack listing, I was hooked. I was in. I was born again a Hanson fan.

So…

1. “Give A Little”

2. They still tour nonstop to sold-out venues. They clearly still enjoy the hell out of it and they still release new music on the regular but they’re not stupid. They’re still giving the audience the oldies….

Their senses of humor still in tact, they absolutely do not take themselves so seriously you won’t hear the cheesy pop songs that initially made them famous.

3. They own their own beer. And what is their beer brand called?

Seven Reasons I Still Love Hanson

I mean, that’s amazing, right?

4. Their cover of Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is endearing.

5. There’s, like, a b’zillion of them. Taylor, Zac and Isaac have three other siblings. These three guys have all been married to women they met at their shows for more than ten years and have ten children between them. We should clearly love them because face it, they’re here to overrun the Earth with their progeny.

6. In November I’m seeing them for the third and fourth time in concert. Their current tour is unique in that every ticket purchased entitles the concert goer to TWO nights in a row of Hanson. The first night is all covers, the second all their music. It’s a ballsy gimmick when you think about it. But good on them. Has anyone toured like that before? I doubt it. (And seriously, having done PR for concert tours, I can’t even imagine how hard that was to play logistically — finding all those venues and making sure they were available for two nights in a row? Nuts.)

They’re not new to tour stunts, though. On their last tour they met fans every afternoon before their shows at the venue and walked a mile, barefoot. For each fan that showed up for the walk, they donated a dollar toward buying shoes for children in Africa.

Not bad for a teeny bopper band that could have been a one-hit-wonder and done.

7. And honestly? They’re not bad on the eyes. And I don’t have to feel like a dirty old lady – these guys are my age.
