FRIDAY FAVORITES – Quarantine Life

May 1, 2020 By AJ Leave a Comment

When I wrote my last Friday Favorites “Quarantine Life,” I did not think I would be drafting another one, many weeks later. My Quarantine Life began on Friday, March 13, so today marks seven weeks of this lifestyle and also means that as it would happen, my birthday, which is a week from today, will mark two months sheltering at home. How annoying. But, as my mom keeps telling me, “this too shall pass” and as the commercials on TV all tell us, “we’re alone together,” “we’ll get through this,” and so on. Just imagine what this would be like if we did not have all this wonderful technology at our fingertips…. So there’s that.

Quarantine Life

WHAT I READ

  • People keep posting this list of Donut shops in LA that are offering delivery and takeout right now. I am not sad about it.
  • Trevor Noah proves he’s even more awesome than we realized.
  • Get into this — the psychology of wearing makeup when you are working from home.
  • TOM HANKS WILL SAVE US ALL. Of course.

OTHER BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

  • Every other week, The Hollywood Picture News is still assembling a weekend watch and it’s jam-packed with recommendations right now!
  • I have been bookmarking recipes like crazy. I want to make this honey mustard from The Kitchn, this carbonara mac & cheese from SpookForkBacon, And Karlie Kloss’ gooey butter cake. I am a pillar of health, y’all.
  • Fit & Awesome is dishing out some great, health advice for staying at home.

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • Did you see the Goonies reunion?! It was ADORABLE.
  • Is anyone else watching “We’re Here” on HBO? I’m so in love. I just watched the first two episodes.
  • I discovered the ultimate time-suck. The live webcam from Times Square. I could watch this all day. Don’t ask me why.
  • I received some superb face-masks from Pinup Girl Clothing. They keep restocking and the prints are super fun.

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

  • Loving this UK “Times Like These” music video from numerous pop stars, including he song’s originators, The Foo Fighters:

  • If you are not watching John Krasinski’s “Some Good News,” what are you even doing with you Quaratine Life?
  • This Stephen Sondheim special was absolutely wonderful. The showing of this gorgeous “who’s who” of Broadway-and-then-some compilation was delayed by some frustrating technical difficulties at first, but once it got off the ground, we went into 30+ musical homages to the Maestro. Watch it if only to see Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald bequeath us “The Ladies Who Lunch” dressed in bathrobes whilst shipping cocktails.

Friday Favorites in Beautiful Weather

April 20, 2018 By AJ Leave a Comment

I’m enjoying a lot of things in this “episode” of Friday Favorites. Also, it is beautiful outside here in Los Angeles and I can’t wait to venture out of my apartment an enjoy it. What will you be doing to make the most of the weekend?

WHAT I READ

  • I finished Hillary Clinton’s book, What Happened, and I hate to tell you that I wasn’t that enamored with it. We all know how the election turned out so every page of the book felt like salt in an ever-expanding wound. The other issue is that, quite frankly, the book is written very stoically. Perhaps with the exact lack of warmth and emotion Clinton’s opponents often accuser her of. I also felt that much of the book was, accidentally, too self-aggrandizing, without taking the accountability she should have at certain points. I don’t know how else to explain. It just wasn’t what I needed.
  • I also read, believe it or not, some Snagglepuss comics (“The Snagglepuss Chronicles”) from Hanna Barbera that were SUPER enjoyable. Would you believe they’re about LGBT rights in the McCarthyism era? Shockingly profound.

  • I’ve been reading a lot about Chef Ludo’s new digs opening up here in the valley. It looks beautiful and I can’t wait to try it!!!
  • Guys, how do I add representing internet pet celebs to my business capabilities? I want to work with puppies like this genius agency.
  • GREAT article from NPR on the importance of independent book stores.  And another one from Grok Nation.

OTHER BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

  • My friends have a really funny podcast called “So is HE Captain America?” that you should give a listen. Click here for their episodes that break down super hero movies for the ignorant.
  • And speaking of podcasts, Media Mandy has some show suggestions for you, too.
  • The Takeout put a spotlight on an eggs benedict, tomato soup and grilled cheese combo that – I’m not gonna lie – I would totally eat. Would you?

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • A film I am working on, Wanderland, got a great review from The Village Voice!
  • I will never shut-up about this. Facebook DOES offer a TON of custom privacy settings. You just have to get up the courage to use them! I wrote a great little piece to help you.
  • Rob Lowe was hanging out with Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney. I don’t know why, but I find this highly enjoyable. And not just because it’s the most handsome photo ever. Dylan and Dermot are notoriously oft confused for one another.

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

  • Did you like the movie John Wick? I did and I am TOTALLY excited for Hotel Artemis.

  • Obviously Dave Grohl is awesome. And he continues to excel at being awesome by introducing us to “Kiss Guy.”

  • If you haven’t caught it yet on social media, let me also share with you the incredible Prince track of “Nothing Compares 2 U” from 1984, just released:

What’s in my Pocket Friday

August 15, 2015 By AJ Leave a Comment

The Best of the web this week!

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing highlights with all of you! It’s been a while so grab the nearest bucket of popcorn, kids.

Pocket enables users to save something they find online for later. I find it especially handy as a Google Chrome extension — I only have to click a button to immediately save something to my pocket. Once something is saved, the content is visible on any device — phone, tablet, computer, and even offline.

  • Best of the Web This Week - What's In My Pocket FridaysRose McGowan, a new hero. A riveting article by Kate Arthur.
  • I have a page on Variety.com. That’s pretty ridiculous.
  • Buzzfeed’s “listicle” about the struggles of having thick hair is painfully accurate.
  • This is old news by now but I love it so much and I don’t care. 1000 people sync up on the Foo Fighters’ “Learn to Fly.”

  • This is also a ton of fun — Luke Bryan duets with Jason Derulo on his hit “Want to Want me.” I love it so much — I’ve probably watched it every day this week. (It was created to advertise a new social karaoke app and it worked — I totally downloaded it.)

  • Apparently this has been going on for a while — this duet with Jessie J and a random user named Coral Leigh is rather beautiful.
  • Who runs the world? These dancers, ages 11 and 14, do.
  • What TV is everyone watching this Summer? There’s a total lack of good stuff out there and I usually find a couple new shows to get hooked on in the Summer season. I guess it doesn’t help that this year’s Big Brother cast is completely inept and unlikable and the new format for So You Think You Can Dance is stupid. But they did reunite “Twilex” so not a total loss.

Best of the Web This Week - What's In My Pocket Fridays

  • You guys, Columbia House is going out of business. So you can’t get 12 CDs for a penny anymore. (Yes, apparently they were still in business. I was as surprised as you.)
  • Inside Out is getting a sequel. Sort of. But I’m really excited!!!

EARLIER THIS WEEK….

  • I ripped apart a pitch that ticked me off.
  • I enjoyed the Del Mar race track. And wearing my red fedora.
  • The GOP debates were a joke. So I treated them as such.

This Week on the Web

August 2, 2015 By AJ Leave a Comment

A “Pocket Fridays” Remix

I’ve been slacking and I’m sorry.

Thursdays are a bulldozer-day (ok, what day isn’t?) and sometimes cracking the laptop that night to draft my Friday post is too daunting. But I’ve still been “pocketing” things that amuse and amaze and today, I’m feeling an urge to share this week on the web. Too many fun finds to keep to myself!

This Week on the Web

  • Not only did Donald Trump take a meeting with Sarah Palin, but Marc Cuban jumped on his bandwagon, and the country became even more distraught that Jon Stewart is retiring from The Daily Show. I’m considering renaming this election the “Sharknado Prophecy.”
  • Says Netflix and Marvel: A new series every six months. WHAT.
  • 1000 musicians gathered in Italy to play the Foo Fighters’ “Learn to Fly” to entice the band to play a show there. Of course Dave Grohl responded that they would. And the video is absolutely epic.

  • A clip from Lifetime’s upcoming “Unauthorized Full House Story” came out and it looks pretty terrible. Frankly, I can’t wait to watch it.

This Week on the Web

  • Shark Tank’s Mr. Wonderful shared some terrific business mantra’s.
  • If you’re into hockey, this piece by LA Kings goalie Jonathan Quick was a great read!
  • Amazon Dash buttons are real but I’m annoyed they are $5 to get and that there isn’t one for Twizzlers.
  • This picture. Just because I want to snuggle him. Or lounge by the pool with him.

This Week on the Web

Earlier This Week…

  • I tried a new restaurant in Culver City called Fin.
  • The company I work for is distributing an important documentary – the trailer premiered.
  • I celebrated National Cheesecake Day with good friends
  • I got a new coffee mug. Even though it’s “Sadness” it makes me very happy.

What’s In My Pocket Friday

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing the highlights with you every Friday!

Pocket Fridays - Best of the Web

  • Neville Longbottom is winning at life.
  • David Letterman retired. Great last episode but I’m not gonna lie about it — I’ve never been a huge fan of his. But again, great final episode. And the Foo Fighters crushed it.

  • The Ethical Thinker explains why she abandoned her popular social media profiles.
  • I very much enjoy Jason Derulo’s new single.
  • Do you know who Pete Davidson is? He’s the youngest SNL cast member — he just celebrated his 21st birthday, in fact. The other night he spontaneously live tweeted a Harry Potter movie and it was fantastic. Entertainment Weekly ended up covering it but I felt pretty cool having discovered it in real time.

Draco tried to rat out Harry and the gang for goin to Hagrids but ended up getting detention as well. Professor McGonagall is a true G.

    • I seem to keep finding blog posts about why blogging is cool. Or why not blogging is ok. I liked this one from Chronicles of Nothing, too.

  • Here are 49 reasons why “Center Stage” is the best dance movie ever. It’s a compelling argument. I love that movie.

Earlier this week…

    • I broke down public relations, marketing and adveritsing

  • I discovered a new vodka brand.

  • My friend let me come over and play with her new kittens.
