What’s In My Pocket Friday

May 6, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

The Best of the web

What’s In My Pocket Friday? Well, I’ll be honest with you. I’m turning 37 on Sunday and I’m not feeling particularly great about it. But all of that is offset by the fact that “Captain America: Civil War” is out this weekend. It’s pretty hard to be bummed out when you get to sit in a dark room and watch Chris Evans in high definition 3D for two and a half hours.

So basically, I’m calling it a draw and declaring that my life doesn’t suck. And on that note, here are some things that also do not suck…. (I AM THE MASTER OF SEGUES!)

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • First, and most important, this post from Donald Trump brought me so, so much joy. I think I giggled to myself for a good 90 minutes. Surely now that Trump has eaten a taco bowl, EVERYTHING IS OKAY AGAIN. (Even his food has a wall. Who do you think paid for it?)

  • There is a magical “nap bar” in Dubai. I wonder when that trend will make it’s way here….
  • There are eleventy billion outdoor movie venues in Los Angeles. Here’s a list of all of them. You’re welcome.
  • Also, this post about hot guys holding dogs IS ALL THAT MATTERS.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Heather posted a very easy-to-follow “Chocolate Chip Cannoli Cones” recipe! Looks yummy!
  • Carolyn sent me a Golden Girls coloring page. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I will be doing this in my office today, no doubt.
  • I saw a couple of great posts about Mother’s Day gift ideas. Here’s one from Chris, and one at Forces of Geek.
  • I’ve been rewatching “West Wing” on Netflix. I still love that show so much. So I was excited when Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford appeared on the same episode of The Late Late Show — AND did this:

  • Jimmy Kimmel also made me chuckle this week — with this video about Sarah Palin and her theories on climate change:

That seems like a good place to stop. With laughter.

Have a lovely weekend!

Take Me To Church – A Holy Brunch Experience

April 29, 2016 By AJ 2 Comments

And so it was written (like, actually written on their website): “Every moment at The Church Key is an interactive experience. From our inventive menu with dim-sum style service, to canned and frozen cocktails, flaming desserts and even the server attire, we strive to constantly push the restaurant envelope. Chic enough for a celebratory evening yet approachable enough to be your neighborhood go-to, overall, we just want you to have fun and eat well.”

There you have it. A perfect summation. I absolutely love The Church Key. I’ve enjoyed a couple of fancy Hollywood events there and recently had the pleasure of trying their brunch. It was actually the first time I’d seen the place in daylight and it’s just so damned fabulous, I was glad to get in before it got crowded for quality Instagram opportunities. Because priorities.

Take Me To Church - A Holy Brunch Experience / The Church Key

Take Me To Church - A Holy Brunch Experience / The Church Key

As if it didn’t look so chic in wide view, there are also lots of unique, vintage touches that I absolutely love, too, when you start to really look. Be sure to walk around!

Take Me To Church - A Holy Brunch Experience / The Church Key

How badly do you want one of those airline drink carts for your home right now?

Probably almost as badly as you want something off this menu….

Take Me To Church - A Holy Brunch Experience / The Church Key

Their brunch menu offers more than just breakfast-like fare. You could have a burger or salad as easily as an egg dish, which is great. I know not everyone likes breakfast food. (But for reals, who are you and what’s your deal?) They also have bottomless mimosas — practically a brunch menu requirement here in Los Angeles, even though I don’t personally need it; I prefer a good Bloody Mary or even just tea. But if you want it, it’s there to give you life at $15. They also have a St. Germaine and champagne carafe for four for $25 that is probably pretty damned tasty.

We were a group of eight so we were able to try a lot of menu! Nothing really disappointed but I would say the “Gratin” fries were a little misleading. We ordered them to share and instead of “fries” we got this VERY fried few chunks of potato. It was a good bite but so buttery, I couldn’t imagine eating much more of it.

Take Me To Church - A Holy Brunch Experience / The Church Key

Can you see how it’s like thin, thin layers of potato refried together? Very unique but I’m pretty easy to please when it comes to potatoes. I also thought “gratin” meant creamy or cheesy.

But the main courses were all decadent, delicious works of art. In particular, to my left, some French Toast that was very nearly stolen. By me.

Take Me To Church - A Holy Brunch Experience / The Church Key

Those are dollops of sweetened whipped cream. In the cup? Strawberry syrup. DIVINE. It was DENSE toast and impossible to finish.

I ordered “Toad in the Hole” and basically had no idea what to expect. And then this:

Take Me To Church - A Holy Brunch Experience / The Church Key

I mean, COME ON. That’s just a big chunk of bread hollowed out and filled with gruyere, eggs and smoked bacon.

I regret nothing.

To conclude I would offer these tips:

  • Take an Uber. Not just so you can drink but because their valet seemed rather untrustworthy to me. What can I say? I function strongly off “vibes.” Also, valet parking in WeHo is never cheap.
  • It’s great for big groups. They have a lot of space. On a beautiful day, they open up the front and it’s l ike eating on a lovely patio.
  • Go for dinner, too. It’s equally as decadent and delicious. Also, the popcorn, believe it or not, is to die for. You’re just going to have to trust me on this and know I don’t even like popcorn that much.
  • Also, Monday nights they offer a fried chicken special.
  • Oh! And —- well, just go there. Okay? Just go.

For all the details, here’s their website.

Don’t forget! If you love brunch as much as I do — or hell, even half as much as I do, you’ll want to put your email address into the newsletter subscription box in the top right corner!

What’s in my Pocket Friday – In the year 2000!

April 8, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

Sort of a metaphorical “pocket” I’m exploring today….

rp_Pocket_Fridays-1024x389.jpg

I was organizing some drawers in my bedroom last night (isn’t that what everyone does at 12:30 when they can’t sleep?) and found a very old diary. And then I was up til 2 AM reading through it. (I am a genius at curing insomnia, apparently.) I purchased it in 2000 in the gift shop of “Il Duomo di Firenze” (The Cathedral of Florence) when I lived there for a semester and documented my life in it for many years afterward (the last post in it is dates 1.3.09).

On one page, I created and filled out my own survey of, well, myself. I wrote: “It will be so fun to look at this in 10 or 15 years to see if I still like the same things.” And it was. In the year 2000, this is what I wrote:

  • Favorite Color: Purple
  • Favorite Meal: Caesar Salad w/ grilled shrimp, side of fries
  • Favorite Music: Counting Crows, Blink 182, Eminem, *NSYNC, Garth Brooks, The Who
  • Favorite Actors: Tim Robbins, Kevin Spacey, Christian Bale, Allison Janney, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Ed Norton, Al Pacino, John Cusack, Joan Allen, Diane Keaton
  • Favorite Movies: Grosse Pointe Blank, The Usual Suspects, Playing by Heart, American Beauty, The Godfather, High Fidelity, Tombstone, Mallrats
  • Favorite Sports Teams: NY Yankees, LA Kings
  • Current Favorite TV Shows: The X-Files, Boston Public, Sex & the City, Will & Grace, ER, Friends, The Practice, The West Wing, Law & Order, Six Feet Under, Ally McBeal
  • Favorite Books: To Kill a Mockingbird, American Psycho, HIgh Fidelity, About a Boy, Fight Club
  • Random Obsessions: The Brat Pack, Michael J. Fox, Tigger, the Internet, Awards Shows, Puppies
  • Hobbies: Collages, building websites, postcard collecting, writing, scrapbooks
  • Celebrity Nemesis: Kate Hudson

And now? Well, much of this we know but just to sync up….

  • Favorite Color: Purple
  • Favorite Meal: Sushi or a great burger with a side of fries
  • Favorite Music: Boy Bands, Garth Brooks, The Who, Sam Hunt, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran
  • Favorite Actors: Kevin Spacey, Allison Janney,  John Cusack, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sam Rockwell, Patrick Stewart, Matt Bomer, Tom Hardy
  • Favorite Movies: Grosse Pointe Blank, The Usual Suspects, Tombstone, Charade
  • Favorite Sports Teams: NY Yankees, LA Kings
  • Current Favorite TV Shows: Law & Order SVU, @Midnight, Outlander, The Flash, Arrow, The Blacklist
  • Favorite Books: To Kill a Mockingbird, American Psycho, High Fidelity, Yes Please
  • Random Obsessions: Boy Bands, Brunch, Tigger, Awards Shows, Puppies
  • Hobbies: Blogging, postcard collecting, writing, cleaning out my drawers in the middle of the night (apparently)
  • Celebrity Nemeses: Kate Hudson, LL Cool J

I am both delighted and appalled that not much has changed. 😉

Hollywood Burger Solves Your Pantages Problem

April 7, 2016 By AJ 1 Comment

If you live here in Los Angeles and have ever been to the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, you’ll likely agree with me about one persistent, frustrating issue.

There is nothing to eat over there.

It’s improved, mind you. There used to be absolutely nothing. An over-the-counter sandwich shop maybe. Now there’s a Dunkin’ Donuts  and there’s that bar a block down that serves good bar food and has only-okay service. But every time you go to The Pantages and want to grab a quick bite before the show, where do you end up? (And don’t say Katsu-ya. No one gets out of that place quickly and not for less than $100.)

But the problem has been solved. Hollywood Burger has moved in across the street! (And even if The Pantages isn’t on your calendar, make a trip out. It’s delicious.)

Hollywood Burger Solves Your Pantages Problem

In addition to gourmet  burgers, other menu favorites include all-natural/hormone free chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, veggie burgers, classic and sweet potato fries, tater tots, salads, milkshakes, secret sauces made with perfectly blended herbs and spices and more. For me it was the VIP Burger all the way with Applewood smoked bacon, American cheese, red onion, tomato, lettuce and Hollywood Secret Sauce. And YUM. Their burger is kind of down-and-dirty. It’s not a fat patty or perfectly round. It is hand crafted, made fresh, and 100% delicious.

Hollywood Burger Solves Your Pantages Problem

We also wanted to sample a non-burger so we got a bite of The BLVD sandwich: crispy fried chicken, spicy slaw, dill pickles & Chipotle-Honey Sauce. I must confess I loved this as much as, if not more than, the burger.

Hollywood Burger Solves Your Pantages Problem

Of course, we weren’t getting out of there without some fries and chili cheese tots. BECAUSE REASONS.

Hollywood Burger Solves Your Pantages Problem

And we could have stopped there, mind you. They had totally earned me as a repeat customer like three bites in. But the Manager hinted he makes a mean milkshake. He wasn’t lying.

Hollywood Burger Solves Your Pantages Problem

And before you point a finger and argue with me “But AJ, I want to have a cocktail or five before I see a show!” Well then to you I say, “Shut it. Hollywood Burger serves beer and wine. All problems solved.” It elevates the place to more than just fast food. TVs on the premises allow you catch the game, and everyone who works there is delightful.

See? No excuses. Problems solved. You’re welcome, everybody. Enjoy!

Hollywood Burger Solves Your Pantages Problem

And one final note on parking — it’s available via several public cash lots in the area or the garage in their building which you can enter from around the corner. They are also very convenient to the Los Angeles Metro. Visit their website here.

What’s in my Pocket Friday

April 1, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

What’s in my pocket this Friday? Well, a myriad of things, my friends. I am just so happy to be here!

Seven movies in six weeks, y’all. And I SURVIVED. I am tired but I SURVIVED. And I hope I have more energy to blog moving forward because I miss you guys!

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • BRUNCHCON, guys. It is coming. I was one of the first people to know about it but I love that everyone posted it on my Facebook wall, tweeted it to me, emailed it to me, etc. You bet yer sweet arse I’ll be there.
  • Social Media Club is hosting a funeral for blogging. Is blogging actually dead? No, I don’t think so but it’s certainly not what it used to be and the discussion should be riveting.

What's in my Pocket Friday - SMCLA

  • Here are 16 perfect places to get pie in Los Angeles. I have been to many but I will certainly aim to go to all. #LifeGoals
  • ModCloth has signed an Anti-Photoshop pledge and I think that’s so fantastic. I love their brand already and now I just want to hug them.
  • Someone laid down Warren G and Nate Dogg’s “Regulate” as if Bert and Ernie are singing it and it is AH-MA-ZING.

  • I covered a PaleyFest  event for Forces of Geek and was reminded of the piece I wrote about Fan Q&As being THE WORST.
  • I discovered the most wonderful independent movie theater in Phoenix. If you are ever there, you absolutely have to go to FilmBar.
  • Hanson’s “MMMBop” turned 20 YEARS OLD! OMG! They did a great interview but you know I have to post the video:

Earlier this week….

  • My company acquired a new bromantic comedy!
  • I reviewed a new burger joint.
  • Trump continues to upset me. Which is an understatement.
  • And by the way, I LAUNCHED A NEWSLETTER! Sign up!

What I Should Be Doing Today

What I Should Be Doing Today…. But I’m Not

Here is what I should be doing today, everybody:

  • Cleaning my apartment
  • Shopping for groceries
  • About three loads of laundry
  • Getting a pedicure
  • My taxes
  • Baking those cookies I bought all the ingredients for like two weeks ago
  • Getting my car washed
  • Getting my car serviced
  • Calling people I haven’t spoken to in a while
  • Writing about half a dozen blog posts I’m behind on
  • Taking out boxes to the dumpster
  • Running a number of quick, easy errands I’ve put off
  • Cleaning out my refrigerator
  • Making room in my hall closet for the storage bin that’s been living in my living room
  • Unpacking from my last two trips

Here is what I am actually doing today:

  • Sitting on the couch
  • Watching TV
  • Writing this post

My Trump Statement

March 12, 2016 By AJ 2 Comments

Share all the Trump posts you want, guys. Here’s the thing. The scary thing. Your friends are not the ones voting for him. Not the ones we need to worry about. So it begs the question…. what do “we” do? What are YOU actually doing? Where are you volunteering? Who are you calling? Where are you going?
I wish I had answers to those questions, by the way. I tried a myriad of search term combinations in Google. I guess Google doesn’t know everything.

I’m making myself a hypocrite in posting this, I realize. I didn’t think Trump was going to stick around and here we are. People still keep saying “He’ll never be President” and I remain unconvinced.

I suppose my point is, it doesn’t matter how many hipsters, minorities and establishment Republicans write eloquent posts about the hateful rally the attended or about how he’s going to make America “hate” again. Somehow Trump has won over a large audience and apparently, he cannot be stopped.
Legitimately terrifying, isn’t it?

Bear with me for a second — there’s this scene in the movie Newsies where all the heads of the big newspapers get together for a secret poker game as a symbol of their agreement not to cover a news story that could very well take them down — and also, to discuss their unanimous support of a Mayoral candidate.

In 1899 no one gave a shit about TV ratings. What a pity they matter so much now.

What’s In My Pocket Friday

March 5, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

Work has been crazy-busy this week and when I’m not working, all I wanna do is sit and stare at the TV. And eat. Luckily I have a bag of carrot sticks otherwise my emotions would taste like Milano cookies this week.

I’ve been going to bed at crazy hours — and by “crazy” I mean 9:30 and 10:00. A chronic night owl, I’m usually lucky to be asleep by midnight.

But it’s Friday and I love Fridays because it’s “Shark Tank” night! And I have time to do this:

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Ben Carson dropped out of the race. Did anyone care?
  • Someone is opening a “Museum of Broken Relationships” in Los Angeles. I think I could contribute to their inventory….
  • I bet you didn’t know you wanted a fox as a pet, did you?
  • Caroline on Crack wrote a great list of Oscar dress inspired cocktails – I love it!

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Speaking of Oscars, they were pretty lousy in my opinion. That whole Stacy Dash thing? HORRIBLE.
  • But I did enjoy Tom & Leo. Leo & Tom. They are my new favorite bromance.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Is it weird to include someone else’s Friday post in my own Friday post? I really liked Chris’.
  • Anne has been especially crafty these days. You should be following her.
  • Do you Snap? I love Snapchat. I’ve really found my groove with it — especially during the GOP debates where the candidates are essentially bickering children. I’ve been adding filters and funny accessories to the candidates. Add me and here’s a lil’ demo:

https://vimeo.com/157812806

Earlier this week….

  • I finished “Ready Player One” and it’s fantastic. A must-read.
  • I started Mindy Kaling’s second book, “Why Not Me?” and I love it already.
  • I reviewed a new brunch spot.
  • Oh, and HEY! Did you hear? I LAUNCHED A NEWSLETTER!

Very Exciting (BRUNCH) News!

March 3, 2016 By AJ 1 Comment

AJ’s Hollywood Brunch Comes to Town

As many of you know (and if not, it’s in the website’s tagline up yonder), I am a fanatical lover of the brunch. My reputation for this has grown and now, truly, not a week goes by that someone doesn’t ask me for a brunch recommendation.

Very Exciting (BRUNCH) News! AJ's Hollywood Brunch Comes to Town

So while I don’t have time (yet!) to dedicate an entire website to the brunch life, I decided a monthly newsletter with an occasional ad-hoc edition would suffice for now. And thus, “AJ’s Hollywood Brunch,” my new e-newsletter is born.

Very Exciting (BRUNCH) News! AJ's Hollywood Brunch Comes to Town

Once a month, expect me to update you on my new brunch-related adventures, new openings, events, places I’ve loved in the past and would recommend, as well as links to other foodies on the web! I will be sure to include content exclusive to the newsletter every now and then so that you’ll find a benefit to your subscription; I promise, and it will be a living, breathing project, ever evolving – I am so excited!

It will definitely be Los Angeles-centric but I’ve certainly had brunch in other towns and hope to add some of those experiences in as well.

Help me spread the word! Please tell a friend. You will always be able to subscribe on this site in my sidebar, or if you’d like to subscribe right away, you can do so here:

Brunch at Market Provisions

March 2, 2016 By AJ 2 Comments

When a friend asked me if I was interested in joining her monthly brunch club I thought about it for a millisecond before shouting YES and doing a little jig.

Brunch at Market Provisions

On Sunday, a small group of us met up a Market Provisions, which just opened in December. Formerly Cooks County, the ownership is the same and the ambience is more casual. There’s a surprising amount of outdoor seating for being a sidewalk cafe, and it’s not bad for people watching on Beverly Blvd. But I’m a vampire and was relieved they sat our group indoors. It’s open, earthy and airy inside, accessorized on shelves with vintage kitchen trinkets like hand mixers, corkscrews and some kind of axe-looking thing we decided must have been a meat smasher thing in the sixties — because when you get a bunch of non-cooks together, that’s what you name things.

Presentation is everything and I loved my little red teapot.

Brunch at Market Provisions

Their menu makes it very hard to choose. I love that they have appetizers — their “small plates.” You could start off with a cup of greek yogurt or a croissant and some jam. It seemed rather delightful except I knew what I wanted for the main course — a rather rich dish. I skipped the small plates.

Brunch at Market Provisions

The “MP Benny” is prosciutto, burrata, two poached eggs and a spicy hollandaise sauce over a piece of thick, rustic sourdough bread.

A couple things: YES, it is every bit as delicious as it sounds. NO, it is not really spicy. I don’t even know why they say that it is. I am the biggest wimp around but let myself believe the waitress who assured me I could take it. Thank goodness she was right.

It was hard not to eyeball some of the other plates on the table.

The Market Scramble with mustard greens, roasted broccoli and truffled cheddar. AKA “I’ll try anything with the word TRUFFLE” in it:

Brunch at Market Provisions

This is called “Eggs in Purgatory” but nothing about this implies suffering to me. Creamy polenta, spicy tomato-roasted pepper sauce, poached eggs and parmesan cheese:

Brunch at Market Provisions

Another fantastic brunch find.  Kudos to the Brunch Club.

P.S. Oh yeah — $5, all-you-can drink Mimosas. Get it.
