What’s In My Pocket Friday

February 26, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

The Best of the web

Hooray! Happy Friday! And it’s OSCAR WEEKEND! It’s like my Christmas. I know a lot of people in my industry are jaded by awards season — it’s true that a lot of politics and pandering come into play — but it still takes me back to being a little girl and wishing it were me in the Armani Privé. I love the glamour and the fashion, the host schtick and (some of) the speeches.

I do not, for the record, like the “mani cam” or anything uttered by Giuliana Rancic.

If anyone would like to fill out their own ballot, this is the one I’m using this year; the bloggers at Sugar and Charm have a cute one.

And here’s what’s been amusing me this week.

Pocket Fridays - Best of the Web

  • First of all, priorities. Here are some new, delicious brunch spots in Los Angeles.
  • I liked this piece from LifeHacker: “A Simple Plan To Start Reading More.”
  • As I drive a fairly long distance to and from work, Podcasts really get me through. Here’s one a couple of my good friends started and our friendships aside, I really am enjoying it! They have good nerd banter and talk about all the nerd things in Hollywood and beyond I so enjoy. Click here for the Hollywood Picture News.

What's In My Pocket Friday - The Best of the Web

  • The former head of the KKK has endorsed Donald Trump, which is all I needed to read this article about moving to Canada.
  • The Simpsons even made a 2:30 short about the nightmare elections.
  • On my favorite show, @Midnight With Chris Hardwick,Hardwick cannot mention Donald Trump without giving him a fantastic nickname. And as I was chuckling over a recent one, I wondered if anyone had made a video compilation… Well, of COURSE:
  • I thought this was interesting — YouTube is now allowing users to blur parts of their videos. Smart.
  • Funko is releasing Golden Girls figures and I’ve really never known joy like this before!!!

What's In My Pocket Friday - The Best of the Web

Earlier this week….

  • I posted a sweet little giveaway.
  • The trailer for a new doc I’m working on, “Fastball,” premiered. If you love baseball, watch.
  • I finished “Ready Player One” and it really may be one of my all-time favorite books.

Sangers And Joe in Pasadena

February 9, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

So what’s a “Sanger?” Well in Australia, it appears to be slang for sandwich, so I’m going with that.

I don’t frequent Pasadena enough, which is a shame because it’s not a bad drive from my home and it’s a rather charming city that hosts a wide array of restaurants. I am particularly fond of Old Town Pasadena, and not just because my favorite frozen yogurt shop is there.

At the end of last year, I discovered a lovely cafe in Old Town called Sangers & Joe. They opened their doors in October, serving up coffee, tea, pastries and delectable breakfast and lunch plates from award-winning Chef Claudio Dell’Anno. In November they added a weekend brunch menu from Chef Rouha Sadighi (The Rooster Breakfast Food Truck, Cutthroat Kitchen winner) with tasty scrambles, benedicts and crepes alongside some of Chef Sadighi’s signature specialties.

Sangers And Joe in Pasadena

Rounding out this new menu are five classic brunch dishes, including a classic eggs benedict and, keeping the “sandwich” in Sanger, the “Breakfast Sanger” — an open-faced ciabatta bread delight topped with scrambled eggs, gouda and bacon. You cannot go wrong with the eggs benedict. I loved that the ham was sliced thin and it made the dish easier to cut into. Their hollandaise sauce is perfection. I enjoyed the Breakfast Sanger but I did feel like the bread could have been heavier — it was a little too flaky for my liking.

Sangers And Joe in Pasadena

But surprisingly, my favorite thing we shared was the avocado toast. Made quite simply with a squeeze of lime over it, it was unbelievably good. You can add a poached egg to it if you like to make it more breakfasty, but it was really delicious as is and when I go back, that’s what I’m having.

Sangers And Joe in Pasadena

And I’ll probably have it with a Chai Tea Latte because it was equally good. They have a massive coffee and tea selection but this is always my go-to to test the “waters.” It was lovely.

Sangers And Joe in Pasadena

The place is really lovely, adjoined to a terrific, independent shop filled with unique vintage furniture items and home trinkets, perfectly positioned for you to take a stroll after you’ve eaten, with convenient street and public parking all around.

A fun touch? A community library! I was tempted to borrow something but I’ve got a stack of books to read already…. I will definitely bring some to donate next time I go, though.

I’ve been MIA, so what’s new?

January 18, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

18 days into the new year, I’m already “this close” to throwing my arms up in the air in defeat. I HAVE ALL OF THE TIRED, y’all. I am having the time of my life at work but my body is paying for it. This past week, in New York for business, I contracted a massive head and chest cold almost the moment I got off the plane. I’ve been home for a couple hours now and am just sitting on the sofa, trying to simply catch my breath.

While I’ve not had time to draft a “Pocket Friday” post in a while,  I’ve still been bookmarking fun bits here and there and wanted to touch base with this channel to share some goodies. What's New?

  • Blogger and good friend Anne is a Pinterest wizard. She has made an incredible packet of Pinterest advertising tips available. Go get it.
  • David Bowie died and I wept. And then I made a playlist.
  • Alan Rickman died and I was devastated. From Mic: “10 Things About Alan Rickman That Will Make You Love and Miss Him Even More.”
  • This. This Vine will melt your heart:

  • On this recent trip, I slept remarkably well, albeit a little sweaty, under a weighted blanket at my hotel. And so I found this article about weighted blankets reducing anxiety. Interesting stuff.
  • Two of my very talented writer/producer friends have started a blog. We are like-minded ladies. I love it.
  • I am absolutely in love with Star Wars envisioned as Winnie the Pooh characters.

What's New?

And what is going on at work that has kept me so busy?

  • Well, All Things Must Pass came out on demand on Friday. It will be out on Blu-ray tomorrow.
  • Band of Robbers came out on Friday in select theaters and on demand. Variety gave it a great review!
  • My company acquired a dazzling documentary about Tiffany & Co.
  • Two more movies on the horizon: 4th Man Out and Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong.

The Best of the web

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing the best of the web with you every Friday! Even on a holiday. I am that dedicated.

Pocket enables users to save something they find online for later. I find it especially handy as a Google Chrome extension — I only have to click a button to immediately save something to my pocket. Once something is saved, the content is visible on any device — phone, tablet, computer, and even offline.

  • I’ve used Blue Apron for the latter half of 2015 but have recently been thinking I should try some of their competitors. Then Chris, the “Sustainable Dad,” published this amazing review of six food delivery services – I love it!
  • My friend Chris of “What I Run Into” fame tipped me off to this addicting little online shop for dog fanatics like me. MUST HAVE ALL THE THINGS.

What's In My Pocket Friday - Crazy Dog Lady

  • Speaking of dogs, how about this list of all the cutest Golden Retrievers ever?!
  • A friend posted this New York Times piece on Facebook — about wearing headphones on the workplace. If you know me, you know I love a good pair of headphones and this article totally reveals one of the reasons why. 😉
  • This recipe for HOT. CHOCOLATE. CAKE.

A Letter to 2015

December 31, 2015 By AJ 1 Comment

I was trying to decide how to best recap a rather magnanimous year. 2015 seemed like a beast that just kept hurling curveballs in my general direction and so ultimately, I decided a letter to 2015 was the best way to do it.

A Letter to 2015

Dear 2015…

Thank you for continuing to keep me on my toes. Thank you for always making it up to me when things seemed bleak. Thank you for the hugs and laughter – even for the tears. Thank you for good times! A lot of good meals! Good friends! There was so much this year — so many things I wish to recall. You might remember…

In January I got my voice back after four weeks of severe laryngitis and lung infections. And that was after I survived food poisoning from Chipotle (I’ve always been an early adopter!). I began my first year as the President of Social Media Club Los Angeles and I got to attend one of the best concerts ever when I managed to score a pair of tickets to Dave Grohl’s birthday party. It didn’t suck.

A Letter to 2015 - Dave Grohl's Birthday Party

Lindsay even let me guest post on her blog! I’m still really proud of it.

In February I had one of the best brunches of my life at Michael’s Pizzeria in Long Beach. I’ve not been back since but I’ll be taking that up with 2016. It was a definite highlight in the month as toward the end of it, I was laid off from a job I loved.

But my temporary unemployment pushed me to think outside of the box and it ended up being one of the most exciting times of my life. I picked up freelance projects, co-worked with friends, began new personal projects I’d been putting off (like this very blog!) and got to enjoy some spontaneity for once, like that time Jessica and I went out for Dimsum on a weekday. It was DELICIOUS!

I met a terrific group of women when I spoke on a panel called “Branding for Women” before a large ballroom audience!

A Letter to 2015

I joined in celebrating the marriage of two wonderful people on a perfect day in Malibu. I got to take a vacation to visit my best friend in New Jersey. I met her baby for the first time. It was a life changing moment. She’s always been the most beautiful, warmest person I know but watching her be a mom made me have ALL THE FEELS.

I thought I’d left the entertainment industry behind but as April ended, a new, wonderful opportunity came my way and next thing you know, I’m the head of publicity and social media for a film distributor! They wrote about int DEADLINE, man. PINCH ME.

“Captain AJ’s Wine Tour” happened and it was a magical day in Temecula, drinking wine, being driven around in a limo by a suave dude in a bolo tie, with some of my girlfriends.

My college roommate, Meg, moved back to LA in June and I am still so glad she’s here! Another beautiful, strong woman I love to watch be a mom.

The Summer brought movie junkets, trips to New York and Sacramento, and premieres that ran into a crazy Fall. My job continues to be AWESOME. Working on Colin Hanks’ “All Things Must Pass” became a passion project and a treasured experience as I connected with members of the Tower family and many still remain friends.

A Letter to 2015

The Eagles of Death Metal played the premiere. It was incredible to be in that audience — even more so in hindsight a few months later…. But I’ll get to that.

Summer also brought courage. I published something deeply personal I’d written that I’d kept to myself for a long time.

My blogging homies got together in July to celebrate “Spawn” turning one, oversized Spawn-head included. IT HAUNTS MY DREAMS.

A Letter to 2015

2015, you outdid yourself with the “Adventure Friends” because we were in FULL FORCE all year long with activities! A Kings game, baking class, the Doheny Mansion tour, brunches, meeting Jeff Goldblum, movies, screenings, gifting, museums. We’re pretty awesome. These ladies were there for me a lot this year.

A Letter to 2015

By the way, 2015, thanks for letting me SING WITH JEFF GOLDBLUM that night. That was pretty cool.

October. I saw Hanson in concert. Again. Two nights in a row. #SorryNotSorry. I marked the one-year anniversary of living alone with pride. I went to see “Adele Dazeem” at the Hollywood Bowl.

I had another mind-blowing brunch in November with my mom at Girasol and I published my most-trafficked post to date, An Old Person’s Guide to the Millennial Vocabulary. I spoke on an EPPS panel — an organization I joined as a rookie publicist in 2008. (Wow, I spoke on a lot of panels this year! I didn’t even mention ConnectHER or EAMC — except I just did.)

Paris happened. I refused to talk about it until I was too angry. I’m still angry.

I dogsat a lot this year, which makes me a happier lady. This also meant a lot of Cody-stares.

Right now I’m sitting in bed with a pretty adorable, fluffy little poodle whom I’ve been snuggling with for a week. Can you tell 2016 I’d like to keep dog-sitting? It’s excellent therapy.

2015, you brought me a wonderful holiday season as well, including two weeks time off from my job. I love it, I swear, but boy did I need a rest! I made the most of it, too – still am – and I appreciate it. I had a wonderful Christmas eve watching a local parade and a hysterical Christmas Day, playing Cards Against Humanity.

A Letter to 2015

Hey remember that saying “I live for the nights I won’t remember with the friends I’ll never forget.” That.

2015, you did right by me. And I appreciate it.

Love, AJ

P.S. (Holy cow, 2015, you filled this year with a ton of AMAZING WOMEN! WELL DONE. Thanks again.)

Bella Julia Cooks With Love

December 23, 2015 By AJ Leave a Comment

If you’re any kind of foodie, you’ve probably heard how food cooked with love tastes better – yes? Well on a side-street in Hollywood,  Chef Chaza Smith is cooking up a STORM of love at Bella Julia and it radiates out of the food as much as it does out of her very being when she greets you or tells you a little about herself. She is positively charming and has a joyous spirit — I was (obviously) really taken with her. In her kitchen she combines Italian and French influences to conjure up delicious, fresh and unique plates with seasonal ingredients that are sustainably grown and non-GMO.

Bella Julia Cooks With Love

But enough about my new girl-crush. I guess I ought to tell you about the food, yes?

My friend and I shared two dishes. My favorite was the Biscuit du Jour – a flakey biscuit, fried egg, cheddar, crispy bacon, arugula and roasted onion aioli. I only ordered it because the waiter said it was “wonderful savory heaven on a plate” and it turns out the man speaks the truth. It was so, so good – I immediately announced to no one in particular that I could eat it for every meal.
Bella Julia Cooks With Love
My other favorite (see what I did there?) was the Lemon Basil Pancake. We chose that because it just sounded so unusual! Served with scrambled eggs, Roma tomatoes, creamy rosemary butter and a perfect syrup (sweet, but not too sweet), it was definitely unusual but also shockingly good. While I may live with the regret of not trying the Brioche French Toast, I’m quite happy I took a chance on this menu item.

We also had a side of bacon. Because no brunch is complete without it. Rest assured it did not disappoint either.
While brunch is always my favorite meal, I do feel a little remorse because I so very much wanted to try more items off of Bella Julia’s menu. But oh well! I guess I’ll have to return soon! Luckily, Chef Chaza found a sweet way to treat me — when she saw me eyeing a neighboring table’s order of chicken wings,  she brought us a sample! Not your typical wings, by the way — I don’t know how she fries them but OMG. And crusted with parmesan, I tell you. DELICIOUS. Not your typical dessert but it was a perfect ending to the meal.

Bella Julia Cooks With Love

As I began this post gushing with love for the Chef, let me just close by showing you this. The tattoo on her arm of a lemon, because it’s symbol to her of freshness and flavor and, in essence, life. She smiled as she told me about it. And so I left the restaurant full… and smiling as well.

Bella Julia is located at 6363 Yucca St. in Hollywood and not to worry, there is a ton of street parking available in the area.

Seven Things Presently Making Me Angry

December 4, 2015 By AJ 1 Comment

  1. We have had more shootings than sunrises in 2015.
  2. In fact, there have been more incidents of terrorist-level gun violence* than days in this year.
  3. And more people have died in these shootings than there will be days in this year.
  4. Gun purchases on Black Friday were at a record high.
  5. I have absolutely no idea how to affect change on this matter.
  6. It makes me feel sick and it makes me feel helpless.
  7. But if one more person tells me “now is not the time” to post happy things on social media, I will punch them in the throat. I’m entitled to my coping mechanisms just as much as your crazy Uncle is entitled to his delusional right-wing conspiracy-theory over-the-top opinions.

A New Favorite Brunch – Girasol in Studio City

November 30, 2015 By AJ 1 Comment

Before I moved in the Fall of 2014, I lived just a few blocks away from 11334 Moorpark St., a restaurant space rather famous in our neighborhood for nothing lasting in it very long. Something would go in and we’d all start placing bets on how long the new dining establishment would last. And sure enough, it would be gone in a hurry — onto the next. Rinse. Repeat.

But I started to see Top Chef fan-favorite (and one of my Top Chef favorites!) CJ Jacobson around the neighborhood. I walked by him on the street once, I saw him in my local coffee shop… And I wondered if perhaps he was going to be next up in the seemingly doomed space and felt optimistic about it. Three years later, we still have Girasol in that no-longer-doomed space and I recently paid a visit to try their brunch menu.

CJ’s craft is best described as “rustic-refined” and revolves around a profound respect for the hyper-seasonal, local ingredients he brings into his kitchen at Girasol, which he conceptually collaborated on with Jorge Pultera, former manager at The Ivy, Koi and Red O. From the moment you walk into the restaurant, you know you’re in for something special because CJ and Jorge took the ambiance seriously. The entire space is really beautiful.

A New Favorite Brunch - Girasol in Studio City

A New Favorite Brunch - Girasol in Studio City

In fact, everything about Girasol is really beautiful — from the kind staff to the cocktails to the food. Everything is art there. Each day you can order from their craft cocktails or wine menu, or you can try whatever the bartender has customized for the day. We were treated to a minty, crisp, refreshing cocktail that I could perhaps relate to you by saying it’s like a moscow mule but better. And I wanted to try something non-alcoholic as well so I landed on a prickly pear (which is cactus)”soda.” It wasn’t as sweet as I thought it would be but still very good and refreshing. And again – artful in presentation. It almost glowed.

A New Favorite Brunch - Girasol in Studio City

A New Favorite Brunch - Girasol in Studio City

When it was time to eat we were more than happy to begin with their homemade bread, herb butter and jams. Absolutely delicious and could very well be a meal in of itself if you allow it…. But don’t. It’s delicious but save room for your meal. Trust me.

A New Favorite Brunch - Girasol in Studio City

The unanimous staff recommendation seemed to mandate we also tried the Octopus Gazpacho starter. I’ve actually had octopus before — it’s quite good though I still can’t bring myself to eat the really squigly tentacle pieces. They served it up with cucumber, avocado, some mixed greens and tomatillo. Again, I could have had this as a meal. Apparently the dish was inspired by a salad on their regular menu — which I now need to return to try.

A New Favorite Brunch - Girasol in Studio City

Look how green and fresh it looks! It tastes that good, too.

Instead of each having our own main courses, we shared two. I think if we asked they would have brought us everything on the menu but I selected two stand-outs. The Bread Pudding French Toast was basically dessert. I’ve never had French toast like that. And I don’t know what they do with the syrup but it’s the best damned syrup I ever had, I tell you. The Maine Lobster Benedict just blew my mind, though. Once I took a bite of that I was making proclamations of love and lust and declaring Girasol my new favorite brunch spot in all the land.

A New Favorite Brunch - Girasol in Studio City
A New Favorite Brunch - Girasol in Studio City

Here’s the thing I quickly realized as well. Despite all that we ate, we didn’t feel sick or stuffed. There wasn’t any of that heaviness that usually comes with eating really rich food. Everything we ate certainly seemed rich and decadent but I only felt satisfied and happy at the conclusion of the meal. I think that comes with all the wonderful, fresh, organic ingredients Girasol prides themselves on. Clearly everything we dined on was of the absolute best quality.

And I stand by my statement – it really is my new favorite brunch spot and I urge you all to try it. I hope it lasts years and years and years in that formerly-doomed building on Moorpark. When I drive or walk by there now, I certainly won’t think of it as doomed anymore. Much more likely I’ll have lobster benedict fantasies.

An Old Person’s Guide to the Millennial Vocabulary

November 24, 2015 By AJ 5 Comments

I had lunch with some co-workers last week and proceeded to get schooled on a list of new vocabulary but that was just the beginning. A post on Facebook rendered dozens of comments and an email to some of my younger friends and family members produced words more foreign to me than Japanese.

So I decided I needed to do some research. While the vernacular seems ever changing and I have no doubt there are even more words and phrases I’ve missed, here’s a glossary of terms that might help us all feel a little more in the know.

Warning: I did not “bleep” the curse words.

An Old Person's Guide to the Millennial Vocabulary

AF: “As fuck.” As in, “I’m tired AF,” or “That girl’s tacky AF.” Also my initials. It’s kind of my favorite.

DGAF: “Don’t give a fuck.” Sometimes pronounced D-Gaf. I don’t know how you casually work that into a spoken sentence but I have no doubt it will find it’s way into my typed sentences frequently AF.

An Old Person's Guide to the Millennial Vocabulary

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ : I mean, this is a person shrugging, right? So I guess it means DGAF? Or IDK? Maybe it’s like “whatevs!”

Bae: I guess this is the new “Boo,” which is slang for “baby,” right? Like “Hey Bae!” FYI, I read that in Dutch, “Bae” means “Poop.” (Note: This is not to be confused with “Bey” or “Queen Bey” as in Beyonce.)

Boom, roasted….

BTW: BTW isn’t just an acronym for “by the way” anymore. It’s used in daily conversation but when said aloud it’s pronounced “B. T. Dubs.”

Chawl: Chill, cool, awesome. For example, “Elon Musk’s Hyperloop is going to make trips from LA to SF in 35 minutes, so chawl.”

Dafaq: Because I guess “WTF” wasn’t hip anymore.

An Old Person's Guide to the Millennial Vocabulary

Dank: Of good quality. “This Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 1992 is so dank!”

Dead: High emotion. When you’ve passed the point of something being hilariously funny or intensely amazing. The stories in this video crack me up and offer a great example.

Dirty: Actually means really good. Like “Yo, that beat is DIRTY.”

Edges on fleek: I think this has something to do with your hair looking good… For whatever reason, I spent the most time researching this term and then my brain started to ooze out of my ears…

FOMO/FOMA: “Fear of missing out/action.” I might say, for example, “I can’t leave the party this early. Major FOMO.”

Gnar: A derivative of the word gnarly; intense as in “Professor Randall’s theory on dinosaur extinction is gnar.”

GTFO: “Get the fuck out,” but not, like, literally. It’s more like when you’re in disbelief. See also: STFU.

Highkey: So this either means “truth” or “something over the top.” Allow me to give a couple examples: “Highkey, man! Check out that ass!” or “Late night party in the hills. It’ll be highkey.” What a versatile adjective.

Hundo P: 100%. If someone asks “Are you hungry?” one might respond “Hundo P full from breakfast.”

I Can’t: Enough is enough so you just cannot anymore! “OMG, I can’t with that puppy. It is too cute!” Often followed by “dad” as in “OMG, I can’t. Dead.” Can also be used in conjunction with “even” as in “I can’t even.” Blogger Awesomely Luvvie often says “I’m unable to CAN” and then she invented the UNABLE TOUCAN. Genius.

An Old Person's Guide to the Millennial Vocabulary

IRL: “In real life.” For example, “IRL he’s totes lowkey.”

Kickback: So apparently this is like more than just hanging out but not quite a party. I think I am too old for kickbacks. Let me know when it means “nap.”

Lit: This is how this was explained to me so your guess is as good as mine — “Yoooo, this party is LIT, come thru.”

LMK: “Let me know.”

Lowkey: The opposite of highkey. Which I’m not even sure I understand.

Mass: A large amount. “You hear Marriott bought Starwood Hotels? They are about to make mass money!”

MOT: Member of the Tribe (For us Jews, I think.)

MRW: “My reaction when…” usually accompanied by a funny gif.  Here’s MRW Jenny McCarthy offered her opinion about Charlie Sheen’s HIV diagnosis:

An Old Person's Guide to the Millennial Vocabulary

Netflix and chill: I was totally going to type “isn’t this kind of self-explanatory?” but then I looked it up on Urban Dictionary. Which I’m just gonna link y’all to cause I’m not about that life. I guess we found where I’ll draw the line.

No chill: Pretty much what you’d imagine. “Dude, you have no chill.”

On Fleek: The quality of perfection. “Your outfit is so on fleek!”

Put on blast: Getting called out for bad behavior. “She put him on blast when she learned he gave her herpes.” I actually put someone on blast at work yesterday. It was totes rewarding.

Ratchet: Look, as far as I’m concerned, this is a type of socket wrench. I don’t understand much more than that.

Same: An entire sentence in one word to echo a sentiment. Don’t say “me too,” say “SAME.”

Saucin’ on you: This one has me perplexed. Does it mean “I’m crushing on you?” Does it mean something about swag? I found several definitions during my in-depth research and came up with nothing declarative.

Shade: Apparently it’s something you metaphorically throw at someone who is disrespecting you. A derivative of one acting “shady.”

An Old Person's Guide to the Millennial Vocabulary

SMH: “Shaking my head” because you are straight embarrassing.

Snatched: All evidence to the contrary, this is actually a compliment. “Hey, have you seen Jim’s abs lately? He got snatched over the Summer.”

Sorry Not Sorry: A short way to say “I’m sorry but I’m actually NOT sorry.” Like when I tweeted this the other day….

Apparently the coffee I had today has made me intolerably hyper. Sorry, coworkers. #sorrynotsorry

Squad: Your crew, your posse, your homies. Taylor Swift started collecting starlets to be her BFFs and suddenly everyone was all about “Squad Goals.”

STFU: “Shut the fuck up.” See also: GTFO

Supsies: A greeting. “Oh — supsies James Franco, are you performing tonight on Def Jam Poetry?” (Remember when we all shortened “Wassup?” to “Sup?” in the nineties? That.)

TBH: “To be honest….”

Tho/Doe: Just short for “though” but used to highlight a point. “That ass, tho!” “That smile, tho!” You get it.

TIL: “Today I learned….” Used less in verbal communication and more as a space-saver on Reddit and Twitter, etc.

TSIR: “The struggle is real.” So much so that we can’t even type that full out anymore. Often accompanied by a hearty SMH.

Turnt/turnt up: An exclamation of excess. “Yo, this party’s about to get TURNT!” OR excessively drunk, I think? “We’re gonna get turnt up tonight!” I’ll probably never use this word seriously.

WOE: We have Drake to thank for this one. It stands for “Working on excellence.”

WYD: “What You Doin?”

Yasssss: I especially liked the definition on Urban Dictionary: “Shit white girls say when they are extremely over excited and/or have had too many pumpkin spice lattes.”

Oddly, I think researching and writing this post has aged me a couple years.

Special thanks to my cousins, my Facebook friends, all the youngins… you know who you are.

And now, readers, tell me: WHAT WORDS DID I MISS?
