Friday Favorites – And a little proselytizing

July 20, 2018 By AJ Leave a Comment

If I may step up on my metaphorical soapbox for a moment, on the heels of James Gunn’s firing from the Guardians franchise, I just want to caution the universe about this massively toxic Court of Public Opinion we’ve created. James Gunn tweeted some things ten years ago that were pretty repugnant. I’m not saying that’s okay, but I challenge you to find anyone who lives a life within or adjacent to the entertainment industry with a pristine record. I know mine’s not perfect. If we start dragging the river for sins of decades past, we’ll be left with very few idols to worship.

I question Disney’s motives here. Something smells rotten in the state of Denmark. Johnny Depp has long been accused of horrible things by multiple sources and yet hangs onto his Jack Sparrow role in their Pirates franchise. Roseanne was quote publicly tweeting and touting horrible offensive garbage long before they finally fired her last month. John Lasseter was never actually fired for his behavior — he saw the writing on the wall and stepped down himself. So why was James Gunn made the Donna Martin of their studio?

I’m particularly incensed by this whole thing because James Gunn is someone I follow rather loyally on social media. He is often outspoken on behalf of the little guy, often anti the right, anti-Trump, and has a dry sense of humor that appeals to me. Of course, I’m a fan, but I can’t say with 100% certainty he’s a good person based on Twitter — the same way I don’t think Disney should be condemning him.

Anyway, off the soapbox, onto this weeks antics….

WHAT I READ

  • Even though it airs in reruns in seeming perpetuity, I am still excited a box set of “Saved by the Bell” is coming.
  • Um…. this thread on Reddit is fascinating. I can’t tell you what it’s about here. I’m too shy. But go look.
  • This dude has been to more than 14,000 Starbucks and it’s still going. Because life goals.
  • Guys, there is a colossal Jeff Goldblum balloon in London. I would like to go Selfie there.

PR & SOCIAL MEDIA

  • Oh Twitter. I love you but you make it so hard for me to stay loyal. Now touting they simply don’t have the bandwidth to fix their verification system.
  • A handful of online activists have taken to the internets to manipulate the Google algorithm and now, when you Google image search “idiot,” you get nothing but images of the biggest one:

Friday Favorites: Trump Idiot

  • Some tips to perfect those Instagram captions, kids.
  • Instagram is testing a feature that will allow public accounts to remove followers. I love this.

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • I AM SOMEHOW UNBANNED FROM YOUTUBE! It’s a MIRACLE! I don’t know how or why, but I don’t care. I can sign in and subscribe now. I can rate. I can comment. It’s a whole new world. (Don’t know that story? Click here.)
  • Recode’s Kara Swisher conducted an EXCELLENT interview with Mark Zuckerberg. I said as much on Twitter and she thanked me for it, which was very flattering.

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

  • Tony Award winner Gary Beach passed away this week. He is particularly special to me as I saw him in the original Broadway cast of The Producers and in Beauty & the Beast way back in previews before it was on Broadway. He also gave a phenomenal performance of iconic song “I Am What I Am” in La Cauge Aux Folles. All videos below are in his honor.

Friday Favorites – 2018: Chapter One

January 5, 2018 By AJ 1 Comment

Happy new year, everybody! I think we can all agree 2017 was the worst and so I have no choice but to conclude this year can only be BETTER. Seems sound, right? If 2010 was “The Year of Suck” (that’s what I always refer to it as), then I hereby proclaim 2017 as “The Year of the Dumpster Fire.” You’re welcome. But I am still bookmarking odds and ends for these “Friday Favorites” and here is 2018: Chapter One for you.

Friday Favorites - 2018: Chapter One

WHAT I READ

  • If ever you wondered about the difference between “gangster” and “gangsta,” Jeopardy has you covered. Sort of.
  • A myriad of Broadway stars are getting TV specials in 2018 and I am here for it.
  • This exchange between Sarah Silverman and a so-called Twitter troll is rather special.
  • A look back at all of the Chrises in 2017.

Friday Favorites - 2018: Chapter One

OTHER BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

  • Amy published her best concert photos of 2017 and it’s a beautiful collection.
  • Jessica reflects on the idiocy and danger of Logan Paul. A must-read.
  • Raquel has compiled a cornucopia of chili recipes and YUM!
  • Hudson & Emily took off to visit all 50 states. Their time in California made ME want to visit California — and I live here.

EARLIER THIS WEEK

  • The trailer for Patrick Melrose came out and it looks fabulous. I love Benedict Cumberbatch.
  • I gave away some pizza. Fresh Brothers is delicious and congrats to the winner, Lindsay!
  • The BRUNCHIES hath been awarded! Get a look at all the winners here.
  • How did YOU say good-bye to 2017? Well, I rode a mother-effing camel in the desert. And it was AMAZING.

Friday Favorites - 2018: Chapter One

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

  • YOU GUYS. The Animaniacs are COMING BACK. I am SO EXCITED. In tribute, enjoy my all-time favorite segment, “Yakko’s World” featuring the incredible voice stylings of Rob Paulsen:

  • And one more thing, speaking of Dumpster Fires, this nonsense about “Fire and Fury” is astounding. So watch the video of the author, Michael Wolff, on ‘TODAY’ this morning and that is all.

  • And because I refuse to end on that note, here:

What’s In My Pocket Friday

May 6, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

The Best of the web

What’s In My Pocket Friday? Well, I’ll be honest with you. I’m turning 37 on Sunday and I’m not feeling particularly great about it. But all of that is offset by the fact that “Captain America: Civil War” is out this weekend. It’s pretty hard to be bummed out when you get to sit in a dark room and watch Chris Evans in high definition 3D for two and a half hours.

So basically, I’m calling it a draw and declaring that my life doesn’t suck. And on that note, here are some things that also do not suck…. (I AM THE MASTER OF SEGUES!)

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • First, and most important, this post from Donald Trump brought me so, so much joy. I think I giggled to myself for a good 90 minutes. Surely now that Trump has eaten a taco bowl, EVERYTHING IS OKAY AGAIN. (Even his food has a wall. Who do you think paid for it?)

  • There is a magical “nap bar” in Dubai. I wonder when that trend will make it’s way here….
  • There are eleventy billion outdoor movie venues in Los Angeles. Here’s a list of all of them. You’re welcome.
  • Also, this post about hot guys holding dogs IS ALL THAT MATTERS.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Heather posted a very easy-to-follow “Chocolate Chip Cannoli Cones” recipe! Looks yummy!
  • Carolyn sent me a Golden Girls coloring page. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I will be doing this in my office today, no doubt.
  • I saw a couple of great posts about Mother’s Day gift ideas. Here’s one from Chris, and one at Forces of Geek.
  • I’ve been rewatching “West Wing” on Netflix. I still love that show so much. So I was excited when Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford appeared on the same episode of The Late Late Show — AND did this:

  • Jimmy Kimmel also made me chuckle this week — with this video about Sarah Palin and her theories on climate change:

That seems like a good place to stop. With laughter.

Have a lovely weekend!

My Trump Statement

March 12, 2016 By AJ 2 Comments

Share all the Trump posts you want, guys. Here’s the thing. The scary thing. Your friends are not the ones voting for him. Not the ones we need to worry about. So it begs the question…. what do “we” do? What are YOU actually doing? Where are you volunteering? Who are you calling? Where are you going?
I wish I had answers to those questions, by the way. I tried a myriad of search term combinations in Google. I guess Google doesn’t know everything.

I’m making myself a hypocrite in posting this, I realize. I didn’t think Trump was going to stick around and here we are. People still keep saying “He’ll never be President” and I remain unconvinced.

I suppose my point is, it doesn’t matter how many hipsters, minorities and establishment Republicans write eloquent posts about the hateful rally the attended or about how he’s going to make America “hate” again. Somehow Trump has won over a large audience and apparently, he cannot be stopped.
Legitimately terrifying, isn’t it?

Bear with me for a second — there’s this scene in the movie Newsies where all the heads of the big newspapers get together for a secret poker game as a symbol of their agreement not to cover a news story that could very well take them down — and also, to discuss their unanimous support of a Mayoral candidate.

In 1899 no one gave a shit about TV ratings. What a pity they matter so much now.

What’s In My Pocket Friday

March 5, 2016 By AJ Leave a Comment

Work has been crazy-busy this week and when I’m not working, all I wanna do is sit and stare at the TV. And eat. Luckily I have a bag of carrot sticks otherwise my emotions would taste like Milano cookies this week.

I’ve been going to bed at crazy hours — and by “crazy” I mean 9:30 and 10:00. A chronic night owl, I’m usually lucky to be asleep by midnight.

But it’s Friday and I love Fridays because it’s “Shark Tank” night! And I have time to do this:

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Ben Carson dropped out of the race. Did anyone care?
  • Someone is opening a “Museum of Broken Relationships” in Los Angeles. I think I could contribute to their inventory….
  • I bet you didn’t know you wanted a fox as a pet, did you?
  • Caroline on Crack wrote a great list of Oscar dress inspired cocktails – I love it!

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Speaking of Oscars, they were pretty lousy in my opinion. That whole Stacy Dash thing? HORRIBLE.
  • But I did enjoy Tom & Leo. Leo & Tom. They are my new favorite bromance.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • Is it weird to include someone else’s Friday post in my own Friday post? I really liked Chris’.
  • Anne has been especially crafty these days. You should be following her.
  • Do you Snap? I love Snapchat. I’ve really found my groove with it — especially during the GOP debates where the candidates are essentially bickering children. I’ve been adding filters and funny accessories to the candidates. Add me and here’s a lil’ demo:

https://vimeo.com/157812806

Earlier this week….

  • I finished “Ready Player One” and it’s fantastic. A must-read.
  • I started Mindy Kaling’s second book, “Why Not Me?” and I love it already.
  • I reviewed a new brunch spot.
  • Oh, and HEY! Did you hear? I LAUNCHED A NEWSLETTER!

The Best of the web

Hooray! Happy Friday! And it’s OSCAR WEEKEND! It’s like my Christmas. I know a lot of people in my industry are jaded by awards season — it’s true that a lot of politics and pandering come into play — but it still takes me back to being a little girl and wishing it were me in the Armani Privé. I love the glamour and the fashion, the host schtick and (some of) the speeches.

I do not, for the record, like the “mani cam” or anything uttered by Giuliana Rancic.

If anyone would like to fill out their own ballot, this is the one I’m using this year; the bloggers at Sugar and Charm have a cute one.

And here’s what’s been amusing me this week.

Pocket Fridays - Best of the Web

  • First of all, priorities. Here are some new, delicious brunch spots in Los Angeles.
  • I liked this piece from LifeHacker: “A Simple Plan To Start Reading More.”
  • As I drive a fairly long distance to and from work, Podcasts really get me through. Here’s one a couple of my good friends started and our friendships aside, I really am enjoying it! They have good nerd banter and talk about all the nerd things in Hollywood and beyond I so enjoy. Click here for the Hollywood Picture News.

What's In My Pocket Friday - The Best of the Web

  • The former head of the KKK has endorsed Donald Trump, which is all I needed to read this article about moving to Canada.
  • The Simpsons even made a 2:30 short about the nightmare elections.
  • On my favorite show, @Midnight With Chris Hardwick,Hardwick cannot mention Donald Trump without giving him a fantastic nickname. And as I was chuckling over a recent one, I wondered if anyone had made a video compilation… Well, of COURSE:
  • I thought this was interesting — YouTube is now allowing users to blur parts of their videos. Smart.
  • Funko is releasing Golden Girls figures and I’ve really never known joy like this before!!!

What's In My Pocket Friday - The Best of the Web

Earlier this week….

  • I posted a sweet little giveaway.
  • The trailer for a new doc I’m working on, “Fastball,” premiered. If you love baseball, watch.
  • I finished “Ready Player One” and it really may be one of my all-time favorite books.

Five People Who Should STFU

November 11, 2015 By AJ 1 Comment

1. Donald Trump. Have we reached the tipping point yet? Enough already.

Five People Who Should STFU

2. Ben Carson. Please, Dr. Carson. Tell me all about the Egyptian Pyramids…

Five People Who Should STFU

3. One Million Moms. Because it’s NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.

4. ABC’s “The View.” I was going to say “especially Raven-Symoné” but really, it’s time.

Five People Who Should STFU

5. Christians*. Because it’s a CUP, you guys. A friggin’ CUP.

Five People Who Should STFU

And while I’m at it, I give you five other things Christians should actually give a shit about:

  1. Poverty.
  2. Disease.
  3. War.
  4. That rash you’ve been ignoring.
  5. Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani — I mean, that’s a weird couple, right?

*Not all Christians, guys. Just the really insane, ignorant ones who are fixating on a RED CUP. These people need better hobbies.

This Week on the Web

August 2, 2015 By AJ Leave a Comment

A “Pocket Fridays” Remix

I’ve been slacking and I’m sorry.

Thursdays are a bulldozer-day (ok, what day isn’t?) and sometimes cracking the laptop that night to draft my Friday post is too daunting. But I’ve still been “pocketing” things that amuse and amaze and today, I’m feeling an urge to share this week on the web. Too many fun finds to keep to myself!

This Week on the Web

  • Not only did Donald Trump take a meeting with Sarah Palin, but Marc Cuban jumped on his bandwagon, and the country became even more distraught that Jon Stewart is retiring from The Daily Show. I’m considering renaming this election the “Sharknado Prophecy.”
  • Says Netflix and Marvel: A new series every six months. WHAT.
  • 1000 musicians gathered in Italy to play the Foo Fighters’ “Learn to Fly” to entice the band to play a show there. Of course Dave Grohl responded that they would. And the video is absolutely epic.

  • A clip from Lifetime’s upcoming “Unauthorized Full House Story” came out and it looks pretty terrible. Frankly, I can’t wait to watch it.

This Week on the Web

  • Shark Tank’s Mr. Wonderful shared some terrific business mantra’s.
  • If you’re into hockey, this piece by LA Kings goalie Jonathan Quick was a great read!
  • Amazon Dash buttons are real but I’m annoyed they are $5 to get and that there isn’t one for Twizzlers.
  • This picture. Just because I want to snuggle him. Or lounge by the pool with him.

This Week on the Web

Earlier This Week…

  • I tried a new restaurant in Culver City called Fin.
  • The company I work for is distributing an important documentary – the trailer premiered.
  • I celebrated National Cheesecake Day with good friends
  • I got a new coffee mug. Even though it’s “Sadness” it makes me very happy.

What’s in my Pockey Friday: Independence Day Edition

The Best of the web this week!

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing the highlights with you every Friday!

Pocket enables users to save something they find online for later. I find it especially handy as a Google Chrome extension — I only have to click a button to immediately save something to my pocket. Once something is saved, the content is visible on any device — phone, tablet, computer, and even offline.

Best of the Web This Week - Pocket Fridays

  • This recipe for BROWN BUTTER ICE CREAM SANDWICHES sent me into another stratosphere.
  • I saw Magic Mike XXL last night with a hoard of friends. It was everything I needed it to be. This review is fabulous but be warned it has spoilers.

The Best of the web this week - Pocket Fridays

  • A great list from Thrillist – 22 Essential LA Apps.
  • Thrillist also broke down some stellar new restaurants and bars that just opened in LA.
  • I caught this video of Wil Wheaton discussing his struggles with anxiety disorder and depression. I thought it was authentic and wonderful. Snaps to the former Mr. Crusher.

And HEY! It’s Independence Day Weekend so here’s a special section dedicated to the upcoming Presidential Election!

  • There are approximately eleventy billion people running for President and my favorite changes daily based on what idiot moment is trending in the news.
  • Ted Cruz thought his horrible Simpsons impressions would serve him well — Jon Stewart thought differently. I’m clearly going to have to record The Daily Show every night now.
  • Bobby Jindal, who announced his candidacy via nanny cam, had an embarrassing Twitter Q&A.
  • Donald Trump is basically pissing everyone off. Like, everyone. He’s second in the GOP poll but with more than a dozen candidates diluting the survey population, who gives a shit?
  • Marco Rubio is selling… (wait for it)… MARCO POLOS. Ted Cruz totally missed an opportunity to brand his coozies as CRUZIES, you guys. #FAIL

The Best of the web this week - Pocket FridaysEarlier This Week…

  • Facebook messed with their algorithm again.
  • I listened to Chris Pratt’s Nerdist Podcast episode. It’s stupendous. Listen to it.
  • I was mentioned in Deadline, which is weird but exciting.

  • Did anyone catch Jeff Ross’ latest Comedy Central special? It’s not only funny — it’s actually brilliant.
  • I was captivated by the Rachel Dolezal story. Awesomely Luvvie put it perfectly.
  • Zookeepers around the world are recreating Chris Pratt “Jurassic World” moments. It is glorious.

Best of the Web This Week - Pocket Fridays

  • I don’t like to blog about politics but really, the GOP presidential candidate pool is out of control. We’re “this close” to an Oprah situation (please imagine Oprah at the convention podium shouting “YOU GET A PRESIDENT! AND YOU GET A PRESIDENT!….”) Best of all, Donald Trump has done late night hosts everywhere a huge favor by throwing his hat into the ring.

  • Channing Tatum did a Reddit AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) and it was fantastic. Among the many revelations he offered were Matt Bomer’s eyes being made of “dreams and rainbows and amazingness” and that he absolutely loves Chili’s chicken crisps (I don’t blame him – they’re delicious).
