What’s in my Pocket Friday

October 9, 2015 By AJ Leave a Comment

The Best of the web this week!

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing the highlights with you every Friday!

Pocket enables users to save something they find online for later. I find it especially handy as a Google Chrome extension — I only have to click a button to immediately save something to my pocket. Once something is saved, the content is visible on any device — phone, tablet, computer, and even offline.

Best of the Web This Week - Pocket Fridays

  • Thrillist made me add a bunch of restaurants to my ever-growing “must try” list.
  • The cast of “Rocky Horror” got back together. I LOVE IT.
  • Suddenly, I want a pet raccoon. Damn you, Buzzfeed.

What's in my Pocket Friday

  • There is a “Now!” music compilation of Disney songs — I want it bad.
  • It seems that people who curse are smarter and more attractive. This makes total sense to me.
  • I thought this was poignant. How people treat mental illness vs. physical illness.
  • Tim Hiddleston, I adore you.

Earlier this week….

  • I wrote a review of the 90210 TV movie from the inept folks at Lifetime.
  • Social Media Club announced our October panel — it’s amazing!
  • Someone started painting this building….

I’ve been slacking! I’ve not brought you a “Pocket Friday” in weeks – shame on me! But here we are. I saved things in my pocket all week long and am excited to share these highlights with all of you!

  • Matt Damon actually whips and nae naes. It’s pretty delightful.
  • Speaking of Matt Damon, I’m excited to see his new movie, The Martian. I just finished the book and it was incredible.
  • Part of me is like “we’ve gone too far” and part of me is like “I WANT THIS.”

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • 50 websites to waste your time on. You’re welcome in advance. Blame Mashable.
  • The Social Media Club LA Pinterest panel was one of my favorites we’ve ever put on. Read the Storify recap.
  • This. If you’re unhappy, stoppit. Make a change.
  • 23 Reasons Why The Princess Bride is the Most Important Movie of Your Life

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • In closing, at least fort his first part, let me just say this: POSTING A COPYRIGHT NOTICE ON YOUR FACEBOOK STATUS IS MEANINGLESS. Stoppit.

Earlier this week… A lot of press broke for movies I’ve been working on!

  • This piece on Buzzfeed with Natasha Lyonne and Judy Greer is a ton of fun!
  • A clip from the doc I’m working on about the Back to the Future lexicon ran as an exclusive with Entertainment Weekly!
  • And a clip from the Tower Records doc went out on Billboard.com!

  • Who watched Colbert’s new show? Frankly, I didn’t like it. But I like him so I hope he figured it out.
  • The iPhone is finally getting an important emoji update. Finally coming: taco, burrito, unicorn….

What's in my pocket Friday - New Emojis

  • All of the nachos you could ever want in LA. I think is pretty important.
  • The next Social Media Club event is about PINTEREST – I am SO EXCITED!
  • Justin Timberlake and his baby. I die.

  • I think Tara’s post about depression and anxiety is really well written.
  • Also, Zelda Williams said some rather breathtaking things on the anniversary of her father’s suicide.
  • This article about email is great. I’m an email junkie. I’m super compulsive about it.
  • I love BBC Radio 1 covers. Demi Lovato singing Hozier’s “Take me to Church” is amazing:

Earlier this week….

  • I wrote about some less-fancy brunch spots I love
  • Tig Notaro favorited a joke I tweeted at her. Life made.
  • I discovered this GIF and I still cannot stop laughing at it:

I Can’t Feel My Face… But I Love it

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing highlights with all of you! It’s been a while so grab the nearest bucket of popcorn, kids. (Note: It was a little tricky to do “What’s in my Pocket Friday” since when I went to open up my Pocket, Pocket was actually offline. But I didn’t feel like changing the name of the series. COME BACK POCKET! I’m lost without you!)

Pocket enables users to save something they find online for later. I find it especially handy as a Google Chrome extension — I only have to click a button to immediately save something to my pocket. Once something is saved, the content is visible on any device — phone, tablet, computer, and even offline.

  • I’ve been travelling a lot for work. I am exhausted. But then I lay down and I can’t sleep. It’s super annoying. Also, on an even more personal note, I have a sty on my left eyelid that absolutely refuses to go away and would appreciate any suggestions, home remedies, miracle solutions, etc.
  • During said trip, I stopped by Buzzfeed’s NY HQ. I cannot tell a lie — it was pretty cool.

What's In My Pocket Friday - Buzzfeed NY

  • There’s a new bar in town and this Medium post tells us all about it, whatever it is, wherever it is. Perfection.
  • I thought the MTV Video Music Awards were terrible. Like, really terrible. It was so incredibly staged and packed with bullshit and when does MTV even show music videos anymore anyway? But you know who I loved? The Weeknd. I have this song on repeat right now.

  • I also very much enjoyed dancing Kanye. Which is about the only 30 seconds I enjoyed him for. If he really runs or President, I’m defecting.

What's In My Pocket Friday

  • I asked Facebook what I should read next. I added about ten new books to my Goodreads queue but settled on downloading The Martian because a few people endorsed it and I would like to read it before the movie comes out next month.
  • If you get HBO and have not yet seen “Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted,” you’re missing out. Her Netflix documentary is pretty fucking great, too. She may be my new hero.
  • Tomorrow I am taking a vacation day. I will be at the spa for at least three hours. Then I may take myself out to lunch and/or to a movie. Please don’t bug me. 😉

Earlier This Week….

  • I opened a giveaway on the other blog – go enter!
  • I was announced as a Brand Ambassador for a jewelry company I love. If you ever wanted to see me without makeup on… (well, I’m wearing mascara is all).
  • iBlog threw a full-page feature my way. I’m immensely flattered! It turned out really well.
  • Did a press tour in NY and has a blast with cast and crew! Here’s one of the stops we made at HuffPost Live.
  • A trailer for a documentary I’m proud to be associated with premiered. You’re gonna love it:

The “What I’m Working On” Edition

It’s been a particularly frantic few weeks but here’s the thing — yesterday I read that a publicist is the first one yelled at and the last one thanked. That may be true a lot of the time but in these last few weeks, despite whatever exhaustion I feel, meals I miss, and frustrations I have, I leave work every day pretty happy. No one’s yelling at me, everybody thanks me — I guess I’m having fun being frantic.

  • What's in my Pocket FridayLast week, “Being Evel,” a documentary about infamous daredevil Evel Knivel, opened in select theaters and on demand. We held the red carpet premiere at the Arclight in Hollywood and not just that — we brought in a 63′ Mack Truck that used to be Evel show truck. We shut down a lane of Sunset Blvd. for this and I assure you, this was no easy feat. Check out the hashtag #BeingEvel on Twitter and Instagram for all the buzz. Here’s my favorite moment from our carpet:

  • This week, to an amazing amount of fanfare, we premiered the trailer for Colin Hanks’ documentary about the rise and fall of Tower Records, “All Things Must Pass.” Have a look!

  • We also launched a Flipagram channel for the film that hit nearly 1000 followers inside of a day. “All Things” is out in theaters October 16.
  • And next week, I’m off to New York to do press and for the premiere of “Addicted to Fresno” at Newfest. The movie is uproariously funny and I’m excited to watch and audience watch it. I laugh throughout the film but it’s much less fun alone in my office while I’m simultaneously taking notes. This one is out on demand September 1 and in theaters October 2.

What's in my Pocket Friday

And now, thankfully, the weekend. I’m sleeping in tomorrow. Switching the phone to silent…. now.

  • Best of the Web This Week - What's In My Pocket FridaysRose McGowan, a new hero. A riveting article by Kate Arthur.
  • I have a page on Variety.com. That’s pretty ridiculous.
  • Buzzfeed’s “listicle” about the struggles of having thick hair is painfully accurate.
  • This is old news by now but I love it so much and I don’t care. 1000 people sync up on the Foo Fighters’ “Learn to Fly.”

  • This is also a ton of fun — Luke Bryan duets with Jason Derulo on his hit “Want to Want me.” I love it so much — I’ve probably watched it every day this week. (It was created to advertise a new social karaoke app and it worked — I totally downloaded it.)

  • Apparently this has been going on for a while — this duet with Jessie J and a random user named Coral Leigh is rather beautiful.
  • Who runs the world? These dancers, ages 11 and 14, do.
  • What TV is everyone watching this Summer? There’s a total lack of good stuff out there and I usually find a couple new shows to get hooked on in the Summer season. I guess it doesn’t help that this year’s Big Brother cast is completely inept and unlikable and the new format for So You Think You Can Dance is stupid. But they did reunite “Twilex” so not a total loss.

Best of the Web This Week - What's In My Pocket Fridays

  • You guys, Columbia House is going out of business. So you can’t get 12 CDs for a penny anymore. (Yes, apparently they were still in business. I was as surprised as you.)
  • Inside Out is getting a sequel. Sort of. But I’m really excited!!!

EARLIER THIS WEEK….

  • I ripped apart a pitch that ticked me off.
  • I enjoyed the Del Mar race track. And wearing my red fedora.
  • The GOP debates were a joke. So I treated them as such.

A “Pocket Fridays” Remix

I’ve been slacking and I’m sorry.

Thursdays are a bulldozer-day (ok, what day isn’t?) and sometimes cracking the laptop that night to draft my Friday post is too daunting. But I’ve still been “pocketing” things that amuse and amaze and today, I’m feeling an urge to share this week on the web. Too many fun finds to keep to myself!

This Week on the Web

  • Not only did Donald Trump take a meeting with Sarah Palin, but Marc Cuban jumped on his bandwagon, and the country became even more distraught that Jon Stewart is retiring from The Daily Show. I’m considering renaming this election the “Sharknado Prophecy.”
  • Says Netflix and Marvel: A new series every six months. WHAT.
  • 1000 musicians gathered in Italy to play the Foo Fighters’ “Learn to Fly” to entice the band to play a show there. Of course Dave Grohl responded that they would. And the video is absolutely epic.

  • A clip from Lifetime’s upcoming “Unauthorized Full House Story” came out and it looks pretty terrible. Frankly, I can’t wait to watch it.

This Week on the Web

  • Shark Tank’s Mr. Wonderful shared some terrific business mantra’s.
  • If you’re into hockey, this piece by LA Kings goalie Jonathan Quick was a great read!
  • Amazon Dash buttons are real but I’m annoyed they are $5 to get and that there isn’t one for Twizzlers.
  • This picture. Just because I want to snuggle him. Or lounge by the pool with him.

This Week on the Web

Earlier This Week…

  • I tried a new restaurant in Culver City called Fin.
  • The company I work for is distributing an important documentary – the trailer premiered.
  • I celebrated National Cheesecake Day with good friends
  • I got a new coffee mug. Even though it’s “Sadness” it makes me very happy.

The Best of the web this week!

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing the highlights with you every Friday! And I had so much in my pocket this week – WOW! The internet is really fighting the good fight, you guys.

Pocket enables users to save something they find online for later. • Even though it’s post-Independence Day at this point, please enjoy this: America explained to non-Americans.
  • Ariana Grande did a huge favor for this one donut shop.
  • This company just raised $86 MILLION DOLLARS to revolutionize their industry. You’ll be surprised when you see what they do….
  • I got to attend an early screening of Minions. I’m sorry to say…. I didn’t like it. And no one loves a Minion more than I do. But I also saw Inside Out, which was AMAZING!

Pocket Fridays - The Best of the web this week!

  • This meme pretty much sums up my life.
  • Posts like this are super helpful — The optimal length for every social media post.
  • Eight birds, one hamster and one dog. Pure adorableness.
  • Someone set the Newsies to Bruno Mars’ “UptownFunk” and I rather enjoy it.

Earlier This Week

  • I featured myself in Vanity Fair. Kinda.
  • I revisited “Menday” on my other blog.
  • This quote made me think.
  • I helped orchestrate Johnny Knoxville’s first Persiscope experience. My job is pretty fun, guys.

If anyone needs me over the weekend, I’ll be meditating….!

  • This recipe for BROWN BUTTER ICE CREAM SANDWICHES sent me into another stratosphere.
  • I saw Magic Mike XXL last night with a hoard of friends. It was everything I needed it to be. This review is fabulous but be warned it has spoilers.

The Best of the web this week - Pocket Fridays

  • A great list from Thrillist – 22 Essential LA Apps.
  • Thrillist also broke down some stellar new restaurants and bars that just opened in LA.
  • I caught this video of Wil Wheaton discussing his struggles with anxiety disorder and depression. I thought it was authentic and wonderful. Snaps to the former Mr. Crusher.

And HEY! It’s Independence Day Weekend so here’s a special section dedicated to the upcoming Presidential Election!

  • There are approximately eleventy billion people running for President and my favorite changes daily based on what idiot moment is trending in the news.
  • Ted Cruz thought his horrible Simpsons impressions would serve him well — Jon Stewart thought differently. I’m clearly going to have to record The Daily Show every night now.
  • Bobby Jindal, who announced his candidacy via nanny cam, had an embarrassing Twitter Q&A.
  • Donald Trump is basically pissing everyone off. Like, everyone. He’s second in the GOP poll but with more than a dozen candidates diluting the survey population, who gives a shit?
  • Marco Rubio is selling… (wait for it)… MARCO POLOS. Ted Cruz totally missed an opportunity to brand his coozies as CRUZIES, you guys. #FAIL

The Best of the web this week - Pocket FridaysEarlier This Week…

  • Facebook messed with their algorithm again.
  • I listened to Chris Pratt’s Nerdist Podcast episode. It’s stupendous. Listen to it.
  • I was mentioned in Deadline, which is weird but exciting.

  • Helpful: Ultimate guide to social media image sizes
  • Did anyone catch Jeff Ross’ latest Comedy Central special? It’s not only funny — it’s actually brilliant.
  • I was captivated by the Rachel Dolezal story. Awesomely Luvvie put it perfectly.
  • Zookeepers around the world are recreating Chris Pratt “Jurassic World” moments. It is glorious.

Best of the Web This Week - Pocket Fridays

  • I don’t like to blog about politics but really, the GOP presidential candidate pool is out of control. We’re “this close” to an Oprah situation (please imagine Oprah at the convention podium shouting “YOU GET A PRESIDENT! AND YOU GET A PRESIDENT!….”) Best of all, Donald Trump has done late night hosts everywhere a huge favor by throwing his hat into the ring.

The Daily Show

  • Have you heard of this? “MasterClass” offers amazing online courses – yours to download an keep for a reasonable price – by teachers like Dustin Hoffman, Serena Williams, James Patterson and Usher. Who doesn’t want to learn “The Art of Performance” from Usher?
  • Channing Tatum did a Reddit AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) and it was fantastic. Among the many revelations he offered were Matt Bomer’s eyes being made of “dreams and rainbows and amazingness” and that he absolutely loves Chili’s chicken crisps (I don’t blame him – they’re delicious).
  • SNL Head Writer Colin Jost has a little twitter feud with Time Warner Cable and it even earned press coverage. But I felt oddly proud since I follow Jost and actually watched it go down live. In fact….
