What’s in my Pocket Friday

June 12, 2015 By AJ Leave a Comment

The Best of the web this week!

I save things in my pocket all week long and look forward to sharing the highlights with you every Friday!

Pocket enables users to save something they find online for later. I find it especially handy as a Google Chrome extension — I only have to click a button to immediately save something to my pocket. Once something is saved, the content is visible on any device — phone, tablet, computer, and even offline.

  • Enjoyable: 13 Fun Things You Didn’t Know Siri Could Do!
  • Apparently there is a restaurant in Los Angeles that serve Churro ice cream sandwiches. I must go there.
  • Some delicious, new brunches in LA – check ’em out! Adding them to my database…. (Yes, I have one just for brunch.)
  • I thought this was great — a YouTube series that breaks down Pinterest ideas. Pin-trusted or Pin-busted?

  • Betty White prank called James Corden!
  • I enjoy this time of year when all the networks roll out their new shows and schedules for Fall.
  • I got some fabulously comfy new flats that I may now buy in every color. I cannot recommend them enough. Check out Corso Como’s Ballasox! (Especially awesome for travel – they fold up into a little pouch.)

  • I’m not trying to be ass but guys, come on. Rue McClanahan died five years ago. Be smarter.
  • I’m seeing Sutton Foster in concert on Sunday! Do you watch her show, “Younger?” It’s pretty great but I’ve been a fan for years. If you watch one performance from her, watch “Anything Goes.”
  • Had a great time leading round table discussions at EAMC yesterday! Post on that subject (Managing Your Social Media Calendar) to come soon!

  • Ready to feel old? Here are 15 common expressions young people will not understand.
  • A great article in USA Today about PR Pros.
  • Christian Siriano is going to design a line for plus size retailer Lane Bryant. That is pretty cool.
  • This rendition of Sia’s “Chandelier” by Elon University’s A Capella group, Twisted Measure, is breathtaking.

  • If you have any curiosity about 3D printing – hell, even if you don’t – you have to see the impact it’s making on lives like this. I am so proud of my friends and Matter Hackers for being a part of this.

  • Captain America and his brother, Scott, attempted a duet. It is undeniably adorable and all too brief. They’re pretty ridiculous and while I’m at it, you need to see their joint interview on Fallon.

Earlier this week…

  • Anne and I tried the new menu at CPK.
  • I gushed about my bestie, Diane Keaton.
  • I pinned THIS.
  • I posted a video of an adorable kitten. You’re welcome.

  • Do you guys read “Job Seeker Tips” on Tumblr? I may or may not have submitted this one.
  • This article from PopSugar about 80s babies vs. Millennials is accurate. Great read!
  • I’ve become irrationally obsessed with OUTLANDER on Starz. A friend persuaded me to check it out. I started it this past weekend and now I’m caught up. The Season One finale airs this weekend.

  • A very resourceful young man figured out “National Good Day.” You’re welcome, Ice Cube. Also, who has this much free time?
  • Robert Scoble posted a long but terrific set of guidelines to make your Facebook experience optimal. Check it out when you have a few minutes.
  • Blogger Marla, from Marlita on the Run, tweeted about these sunglasses — they’re ART! I love them. I’d never wear most of them, but a couple I would… Who’s gonna loan me $800?
  • Is it weird that I love a really scathing movie review? Entertainment Weekly did NOT like Aloha. Not that I blame them. It looks pretty terrible.
  • BIRTHDAY. CAKE. WAFFLES. Enjoy.
  • In case you haven’t noticed, it seems like Facebook is allowing animated gifs in posts. If they start allowing us to post midi files and customize our “top eight,” I’m packing it in.

Loud Noises

Earlier this week…

  • The company I worked for announced a new acquisition.
  • I professed my love for a backpack.
  • I felt lust for french fries.
  • Screener season officially began when I got a package from AMC.

  • Neville Longbottom is winning at life.
  • David Letterman retired. Great last episode but I’m not gonna lie about it — I’ve never been a huge fan of his. But again, great final episode. And the Foo Fighters crushed it.

  • The Ethical Thinker explains why she abandoned her popular social media profiles.
  • I very much enjoy Jason Derulo’s new single.
  • Do you know who Pete Davidson is? He’s the youngest SNL cast member — he just celebrated his 21st birthday, in fact. The other night he spontaneously live tweeted a Harry Potter movie and it was fantastic. Entertainment Weekly ended up covering it but I felt pretty cool having discovered it in real time.

Draco tried to rat out Harry and the gang for goin to Hagrids but ended up getting detention as well. Professor McGonagall is a true G.

  • My trip to New York was really a trip to New Jersey because once I stepped into my best friend’s home there, I felt warm, cozy and loved and hardly wanted to leave. However I’m afraid this means most of my vacation photos are of her dogs.

  • Apparently people still care about Grey’s Anatomy. I stopped watching when Izzy started hallucinating. But I think everyone who posted spoilers on Facebook in real time last night stinks. Not nice, people.
  • London knows how to properly celebrate their icons. Look how they paid tribute to Monty Python.
  • This journalist wears the same thing to work every day and I think she’s amazing.
  • Blogger Chris Lam tells us how NOT to get a bikini bod. God bless her.
  • I caught onto this genius Thug Kitchen cookbook commercial. “I love to cook good food but who has the fucking time….”

  • Terrific interview in the NY Times with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. Have you watched Daredevil? It’s amazing.

  • The newest Netflix Original Series trailer for ‘Grace and Frankie’ looks terrific. Bonus points because two of the stars (Martin Sheen, Lily Tomlin) were on ‘The West Wing’ and two were on HBO’s ‘Newsroom’ (Jane Fonda, Sam Waterston). I love Aaron Sorkin.
  • Speaking of trailers, I really couldn’t get into the first season of ‘True Detective’ but I’ll try again with season two. Especially because I think Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell will surprise us all and I am pleased to see Rachel McAdams in something more cerebral than her norm.
  • I’ve been very patient and it seems like I may finally get my Golden Girls Lego set after all…

  • Here are 23 times Golden Retriever puppies were adorable dweebs.
  • This guy was sick of looking at benign office walls so he purchases 9000 post-it notes and got to work. The results are outstanding.
  • Would you use a “Fanny Basket” while shopping? Don’t know what that is? Click here.
  • Ever seen something so sweet and cute it all but made you CRY?

  • I went to a beautiful wedding on Wednesday (Yes! On a weekday!) and loved playing dress-up with friends, seeing two people I adore get their happily ever after, and meeting loads of wonderful, new people. It’s often easy to bitch and moan about weddings but this was a really joyous occasion. Even though it happened mid-week, it seems like a nice way to close out this post and head off into the weekend.

  • The apocalypse is HILARIOUS! I have been helping a friend with his movie’s trailer premiere. It is amazing how funny a simple teaser can be in less than 90 seconds in the hands of good filmmakers. Take a look at the coverage over at “The Mary Sue” or just have a look here:

  • I had a fun night out in Hollywood Wednesday when I went with a friend to see one of my all-time favorite movies, ‘Newsies,’ at the El Capitan Theatre WITH THE ORIGINAL CAST. As luck would have it, they were sitting in the row right in front of us, which was delightful. Afterward, the national touring company of the musical came out and surprised the theater by performing two numbers from the show. It was an incredible event.

  • It was a good night for people watching, too. Jesus was sitting out on the street playing Red Hot Chili Peppers covers and I spotted Tinkerbell chatting up a taxi. (Frankly, I think she should fly but whatever. Her life.)

  • I was also doing some light window shopping. I was impressed how well Disney created the stepmother doll in Cate Blanchett’s likeness and how they utterly failed representing Helena Bonham Carter.

  • “15 Things Ambitious Girls Do a Little Bit Differently When They’re Dating” from Thought Catalog. It is SPOT. ON.
  • “Four Things to Consider Before You Get a PR Team” – so simple and well said from Entrepreneur.
  • A terrific new Tumblr called “Not Getting the Job” that is essentially job applicant FAILS. I laugh at every single one. How sad that so many are familiar to me….
  • Yesterday, I had three pretty rowdy co-workers. Kona, Cody and Lucy. They don’t get a lot done around the office but I believe they really contribute to the flow of creativity!
